Nikon and Canon are both good with an excellent range of quality lenses available you can add later. Try to decide what features are more important to you and which feels better in your hand.

k100d for shake reduction, decent kit lens, and compatibility with all legacy pentax-k mount lenses for 35mm pentax cameras(though some require manual metering or focusing). Good current selection of wide-->normal angle DA (digital only) lenses. Negatives are lack of ISO 100 (starts at 200) no RAW+jpeg mode, and limited selection of telephoto DA lenses (tho several due by the end of the year). The K100D Super adds auto dust removal system from the K10D, which got mixed reviews when it came out. A good sensor swab will probably work better, and you can save some $$$ by getting one of the regular K100D bodies (i think prices are coming down since the Super was announced)

The rebel looks like a good choice too, especially if you have access to a good market for second hand lenses to use with it. I looked at the Nikon D40 but was put off by over-reliance on program modes, limited lens selection, and lack of compatibility with other nikon system lenses -- but that may have changed.

I would not get too caught up in megapixels ... 6 is enough for most uses, unless you're planning huge enlargements

To the people that have the K100D, what do you do in low light situations to see on the status panel?

Use the viewfinder?

That is almost the only drawback of the k100d, that the status panel isnt backlit
