Since you've already ordered,

1.print out the web pages that specify what you ordered, including lens manufacturer (e.g. Sigma, Tamron, Tokina and others make lenses of the same focal lengths that Canon and Nikon do).

2. Look for their terms and conditions (ie the part that specifies delivery, cancellation, etc) and print that out. This may be on the product page, but there is probably a page full of fine print hidden somewhere.

3. print out every email you get from the company.

4. If you can, record every call you have with the company. If you can't record, ask them for permission to record (if they think the call is recorded they may be more honest). And ask them to specify brand names and product numbers for everything they offer.

5. Become familiar with the cost of options, like third party batteries, third party chargers, extended warranties, polarizers and UV filters (and know the difference between uncoated, coated and multicoated, and circular vs linear polarizer).

6. A favorite line of some of these guys is "do you want metal or plastic lens mount" or "do you want the magnesium body or plastic body" Generally, the manufacturer makes only one or the other (ie a given lens will have a metal (or a plastic mount), there is no option to get the other.)

7. As the salesman to send you a detailed quote, and post it here for comment :-)

thanks for this.....i printed tha page of the Camera, and all the online terms... it does say like some one said all ready next to the lens it says " FOR A NIKON D200" so it very well could be like a Sigam or some thing.... what are other brands that can be use for Nikon... i thought it was Sigma, Tamron or the brand is all they had that fit with the Nikon.....

I would like to Record the phone call my self... how would you go about doing this....i know some times you can use answering machines...from a land line.....

and about the Metal or plastic thing...... is this the mount on the camera or the metal ring around the base of the lens

the plastic mount would be the ring on the lens not the camera. I believe besides Sigma and Tamron, Promaster may have a nikon mount series. Not sure on the quality of them either as I have never looked at one close up or through one for that matter.

so i take it the Nikon mount series is the metal...

That depends on the lens. I have one nikon lens with a plastic mount and I know of at least one more in the line that is plastic.

ok so as in plastic you talking about the peace that screws into the camera right ... that peace?

I fell into one of these with my D70 - I ended up with a grey market camera that is not supported by Nikon, I can't get firmware upgrades, and there was no warranty other than through the guys I bought it from.

It's been going strong for three years - not a lick of trouble - I saved a ton of money, got into digital photography in a real way months ahead of when I would have been able to otherwise.

It doesn't always end up bad.

You felt great about your purchase until you talked to these yahoos - go with that feeling. Keep the positive vibe going. These people in this forum don't know - they read on the internet and they love to jump all over every bad situation instead of going out and taking some photos.

You're fine. You had a good feeling about this, trust that. If it gets rocky, work through it. I did, and it worked out great in the long run. Three days of stress for three years of a great affair with my camera. Seems like a pretty good deal in retrospect.

Yes that is the piece.

I don't know about anybody else, but my experience has been to lend a great deal of credence to the advise I get from people in this venue as it has saved me from the headaches others have experienced.

As to the lenses, some Sigma, Tamron and (I think) Tokina) lenses can be better than some Canon or Nikon lenses. For example, the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 beats some (or all?) of the consumer Canon lenses. The Tamron 28-75mm is considered to be almost as good optically as the Canon or Nikon equivelant (but has a lesser build quality and is 1/3 the price) In general, a constant aperture lens beats one with a variable aperture, but there are some notable exceptions.

So look at the specific lens. Many of the third party lenses are quite good. Many of the name brand (and many of the third party) lenses are merely ok, and a few are bad.

As for recording phone calls, there are a couple of ways to do it.

1. get an adapter from Radio Shack or similar that allows you to record phone calls and connect it to a tape recorder.

2. If your PC has a voice capable modem, there are some programs you can buy to record phone calls.

3. some answering machines let you record the call.

If you do this, be aware that most, if not all, states have wiretapping laws. IANAL, but a good reference is at //www.rcfp.org/taping/

I agree, I've learned a lot here and sometimes that good ol' cliche "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is..." does ring true.

Chris, if you do cancel your order (which, IMO you should)

Amazon has the body for $1100

You can legally record the phone call. Just tell them at the begining that the call may be recorded for training and quality control.

Well i thank you all for everything. i have done some research... and have some stuff printed out and what i ordered.... i am about to call them now i got "The E-mail" (lol) stating to call them to confirm my order.... so i will let you all know how it goes... i mean i do want to try and see what happens.... Because if i can get the Kit for that price then i will have saved alot of money.... i did look up those lens that come with it and if they are Nikor lens ( i dout they are) but the price for the 18-55mm is like 1100.00 but it was being sold from ritz camera ( sometimes can be over priced IMO ) so that made me think a little as well.... Sigam sells the same lens for 415.00 roughly...

Well here i go =)

Ok well that call was short and Sweet lol.... he said the Lens were Vivitar and they were not digital. Now the body he said was plasic and imported and that it was not Magnesium. (So he wanted me to upgrade the lens and the camera body and it would cost me like 1799.00 for this kit). i said it only comes in the magnesium and no other way.... he then put me on hold and came back with some other crap... and said he can get me a D80 for this price kit and all... i told him i am not interested and to cancel my order he hung up on me in a hurry did not say a thing.... so i guess thats it... i just watch my Cedit Crad and see if anythign is being ran through it...

I really dont get how they can do this.... i mean the picture on the link i gave you all the lens in the picture are Nikor lens it all just a bunch of "WAY" false advertisement.... well i learned my leson... now i can go back to shopping once again =(

A story line that has been repeated many many times.

Good luck!

I would contact your credit card company pronto and make sure that they block any transactions. They might charge you a fee usually around 30 dollars or so But it is better then losing 1100 or more. Better Safe than sorry.
07/29/2007 02:20:22 PM · #70
Yes, please do contact your credit card company. It's been a learning experience, let's try not to make it a costly one.

FWIW, I would just cancel that card and have them send me another.

I cant post this site too many times //donwiss.com/pictures/BrooklynStores/

If the shop has a "718" area code listed for any local numbers such as fax, it's prob a Brooklyn store.

Darn, they changed it. Must have been a mistake, lowered the price instead of raised it. The D200's were down to around $1,300 when I bought mine.

Resellerratings.com is your best friend. Memorize the link and ALWAYS check before you buy from somebody you find on the web.

Or, just buy from B&H and sleep soundly at night.

FWIW, you can get a refurb D200 body here for $1250. You'll actually get it, too. ;-)
