Shame, most things in life are scams now. I was scammed out of some money last week. Instead of losing my temper, I beat the shit out the scammer (one of my friends but hey, I guy's got his rep to maintain).

Cole's Notes;
He needs a new job, got an offer that sounded really good, researched the hell out of it, seemed okay, then just when he was about to go for it, found it was a scam :( |

Geno, don't beat yourself up over this. In fact ya should be happy as hell that it you DID find out it was f**ked up. I think that you knew deep down that it didn't seem right and that's why ya kept diggin' at the end even when you were pretty much mind made up.
If it's still buggin' ya, call me...

yo, gene, relahhhhhcks ;-) you're one of the lucky ones who got away.
a few years ago, i was in a similar situation, watching a business i had spent nearly 20 years building slowly evaporate. i don't know if i'd call it depressed, but i was pretty bummed. and i was trying to figure out what to do next.
and i saw an ad in the paper for a business opportunity selling premium cigars. i would have an exclusive territory and wholesale prices to the best cigars in the world. all i had to do was keep the humidors stocked. how sweet was that? simply buy these high-end countertop humidors and a month's worth of inventory and i'd be on the road to riches...
i ran the numbers every which way, and it looked good. no, it looked fantastic. i talked to my accountant. he hooked me up with another client who had bought into a similar operation. i got the inside dope--it wasn't automatic, but, with a committed effort, money could be made. well, i was ready for a commitment. i talked to a lot of friends who smoked; they thought it sounded great. i talked to my wife; she told me that if i had done my homework and that if no one was telling me 'hey, look out!' then may be i should take the next step.
so i called this guy up (he's down in florida), and i told him i wanted to fly down, meet him and his partners, and tour the operation. i told him i'd be bringing him a cashiers check and i was ready to go. and ya know what? he just couldn't find time in his schedule just to drive out to the airport and meet me for half a day. all on my dime. and here i was, getting ready to drop close to 5k into this. i can't believe how close i came to getting smoked. all he had to do was give me a date and show up at the airport.
who knows? maybe i did miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime. probably not. just remember, geno, it's not a matter of getting mad that you almost jumped in. it's the fact that you did bother to do enough due diligence to keep from getting hurt.
keep on pluggin, dude, things will work out!

Don't feel too bad Tater, I want to thank you for posting. I received the same email from my resume at monster.com and in doing a quick check came across your post. sure made it easier to make a decision. There is actually an internet crimes dept for the FBI. I try to make sure this caliper of crook at least get entered into the hall of fame there.
A few years back I outdid the best act of stupidity. I bid on a diamond ring on line and won.(it was supposed to be a gift to my future son in-law to give to my daughter, they were young and broke) The man's name was Anthony Jolly or Tony Jolly from up by Phoenix Arizona. He sent me a box alright, an empty cheap ring box, the company was Diamonds and things, which by the way did not exist. When I contacted him he claimed someone during the shipping process must have stolen it. When I filed a complaint with the post office(it was shipped next day) I was informed he didn't insure the ring. The cost you might ask? A few dollars shy of $5,000.00. Normally one would think if you pay a large amount for a handling fee, insurance would be purchased if there was in fact a ring: unfortunately,to insure an item it must be viewed before shipping. Anyway the guy never provided the ring or refunded the money though I reported him to the auction site ,the US postal inspector and FBI my money was never returned.(I paid by cashiers check as requested) I guess it happens so frequently it is impossible for them to investigate every case.
At least with this job offer I immediately found your post. Thanks Tater CJ

I came across these boards because I was researching an email I got about an online money exchange service that wanted to hire me. I want to thank you for getting the word about these scammers. I thought the offer sounded too good to be true and you confirmed my feelings. Thanks again! |

To me you sound very wise. You didn't rule out any option, but before leaping, you did aLOT of research and investigation, and as a result, spared yourself a huge loss -- financially and in dignity!
My prayers are with you about the job thing. My husband was out of work for almost a year once, and if you feel anything like my husband did, my heart so goes out to you. It is a hard, low time! BUT, you WILL get another job, and you WILL be able to put this period behind you, and one day you will even see some good that comes from it. I promise! For now, if I were you. . .I'd be feeling pretty good about myself for having the savvy to sniff out these crooks before you got yourself in trouble.
Hugs and Prayers,
Sandy
