Do you try to shoot everything and be good at it? From landscapes to macros to portraits to flowers.
Or, do you strive to be really good at a limited range of styles?
Just curious.

I try and shoot everything in the hope I'll find something I'm really good at. |

i think it is possible to be good at more than 1 category of photography. not saying i am, but saying it is far from impossible. |

I think becoming confident with various styles of photography helps you become better at your style of choice, as it prepares you for situations when they appear. |

I strive for perfection in everything I do, and I pursue the shots that interest me without considering what category they fall into. |

I sort of muddle along photographing anything and everything. Maybe one day I will discover a genre and style that I am actually good at.... |

Obviously, I shoot more motorsports because that's where my interest lies. OTOH, my best scores are not that, but I suspect that lies in the voters likes & dislikes.
As an amateur, I'll experiment with other things, and get the appropriate feedback in the challenges. For me it's a lot about learning, and that's my main purpose for being here.
In the end, this is about my entertainment, and I'm having fun!

As soon as I can find a hot, nekkid chick to do some posing, then I'll come back and say yes.
For now, I'll be a near Jack, or pretend to be one anyway.
I personally feel everyone should try new things. Get out of that comfort zone. Never shot sports - just do it (ok, bad pun). Candids are always a very uncomfortable place for so many, but personally I feel it's life's most rewarding captures.
I don't know about most of you out there, but unless something is challenging, it is too easy to get boring. When your work gets boring, the quality goes down and stands out big time.
Mix it up guys and gals. Try something new. Put yourself to task and get out of that mushy comfort zone. Worst that could happen is a low score (in a challenge) or you may end up finding a new direction that truly becomes your passion.

I'm still in the experimentation phase of my growth ... and I don't foresee that ending any time soon. :-)

I'm happy to hear there are quite a few jacks around here. I totally agree with Brad.
I try all of them myself. I know I suck at landscapes (although I think that's a function of sucky landscapes), not particularly good at macro either. Neither stops me from trying once in a while.

I normally settle for 'barely passable'. 'Good' is way beyond me.

There are certain types of shots I tend to do more of and I am generally better at. E.g flowers, buildings, landscapes. However I really struggle with portraits. Heck if I know why. If the person is doing something such as playing a sport, playing a guitar, playing tiddly-winks my shots are better. But if they are just standing there? Can't do it. No wow factor. No pizzaz. Maybe because I hate posing people. Anyways...

Oh please. Switching from American to Jack cheese doesn't count.

I think most people will know what my passion is. But that doesn't mean I only shoot portraits.
The thing I like from shooting portraits is that there's always interaction with the model, and finally the viewer. You gotto come up with something good, because otherwise there will be no interaction --> the photo will not be remembered. There's gotto be a story, or a series that creates a story. When that can happen, man, then I'm happy :)
I like still-lifes as well. Being alone in my studio, trying 100.000 different things, spending 2 hours for one perfect shot, that is also what I love. It almost feels like meditation, but I've never done that so I'm not sure.
Portrait photography IS the part where I wanna be in photography. But I hope that won't exclude the product-photography.

Call me "Jack" - it doesn't mean I am that good at anything, but I always want to try:)
I have a pretty wide range when I look at my portfolio and my personal top 10 scorers. I don't know if that is good or bad, but it is just the way it is.
