I can't believe it......my camera died. I was taking pics this afternoon, one after the other, when the next one was just a black screen....and the next one.....and the next one. It sounded like the camera was taking a photo and it was recording the shutter speed and aperture, all the info, but no photo. I tried switching lenses, the battery, memory card, nothing worked. We did buy a 2 year extended warranty and the camera is 2 years, 9 months old so we are hoping that the manufacturer's warranty was a year, that way it will be repaired at no cost. We will call the store (Henry's in Toronto) tomorrow when it opens. It will suck having to send my camera away for repairs but it would suck even more having to buy a new one! I do have an Olympus C-770 I can use in the meantime but it just won't be the same.

I believe I've taken about 60,000 photos with it.

Karen, sorry to hear your camera died. Look at it as an opportunity to upgrade! :D

Oh Karen, I KNOW how you're feeling - it's positively SICKENING!

It happened to me earlier this year and I was STUNNED!

I couldn't believe that it could happen without warning and I had been SO precious with mine - and then it was gone!

For me good things happened from the shock - I've ended up with a 30D which has changed me forever - I wish for you great things from you trauma!

Wow, yet another Canon problem. Of course its only an upgrade if you switch to Nikon.

Karen I'm sorry to hear about your camera, sounds like the mirror/shutter has died. Although 60K is pretty good for a 300D. Its my understanding its rated at 10K. If its like the other Canon products if its not under warrenty your looking at about $250USD repair(not sure what that translates into CA) You may want to look at upgrading rather then repair if your warrenty doesnt cover it. I'm sure a 350D or a 400D could be had, even a refurb 20D or 30D.

check to see what henry's has in their other store on queen street, the used/returned camera are always cheaper. You may be able to get a 350d for a good price

Thanks everyone, called Henry's this morning, our extended warranty will cover repairs or replacement, they will decide when they get the camera. $115 well spent! I am so glad!!!!!!! Now to get it shipped off quickly so I can get it back as soon as possible.

I bet you love that little shutter demon. And I bet it has a lot of clicks on it too. I know my 350XT had well over 100,000 on it when, last week, its teeny weeny little shutter button up and died on me. It was a sad loss. But I reckon it was due and we had been together a long time. I was thinking of selling it a few weeks agao - lucky I didn't, since the buyer might not have been happy. I looked around and found a 5D on Craiglist.com for a very sweet price - brand new unwanted present. Being in the NYC metro area, makes Craigslist.com a good resource for photo gear. Perhaps where you are located, it might not be so good. But I certainly know that you would appreciate the 5D - since your work already zings with the 300D. Anyway, I am going to get my 350XT fixed, for old time's sake. That is the decent thing to do. Good luck.

That's a real bummer, Karen. Hope you get it fixed and back just as soon as possible.

oh Karen, I'm soooo sorry! I can sympathize. I had the same camera, and the same problem, about a year ago. My problem was that I have a need for instant gratification, and instead of sending it in and waiting to get it fixed, I bought the new Xti instead!

I'm glad to hear that yours is covered under the warranty. I hope it gets fixed fast!!!

Well, I heard back from Henry's and it will take 4 to 6 weeks to get my camera back. I am using a small point-and-shoot now and it is desperate! Fortunately, this evening my partner's best friend called and said he will loan me his Rebel XT during the week, he works all week and only uses it on the weekends. So I won't have too many withdrawl symptoms! LOL Isn't that nice of him?

That's some good news!

Sounds like you have it covered, and that's good news.
I bought a second DSLR, the same model as my first, when I let the white smoke out of the first one. I had it fixed for $400, and it is still going strong. I was really bummed about not having my good camera within a couple of seconds of my hand for the month though.
I will say that the Fuji Pro repair station is great about service though.

Well, 39 days after it died, I finally have my camera back! Repairs were covered under the extended warranty I bought, the work order says Canon replaced the shutter. And wouldn't you know it, it's raining today!!!! But I am so glad I got it back before our vacation to Washington DC on August 14th.

Glad to hear it Karen. Hmmm, perhaps I should look into an extended warranty on my new Nikon. Anyone know if you can still get one 4 weeks or so after you get the camera?

Most warranty's you can buy anytime during the original warranty, but its not from the date u purchase the warranty its from the date the camera was first sold as new.
