I think I've pretty much decided that my next lens puchase will be one of these two:
Tamron 17-50 2.8
Canon 17-55 2.8 IS
I'd appreciate any imput users of either of these lenses might have. Do you think the Canon is really worth twice the price of the Tamron? I tend to go cheap, but really want this to be a good, usable lens and it will likely be the one that will get the most use from me - so I am willing to save longer if need be.
What do you think?

| Looks like the price premium on the Canon is due to the obscene amount of ribbon mojo they dip the glass in. |

| The Canon has the IS of course, one thing you'll like about the tamron is if you use Polarizer's its internal focusing the front lens barrel does not rotate. You don't have to screw with your polarizer every time you change focus or accidentally forget to. |

Please 5 ribbons? The original 18-55 EF-S kit lens has atleast 10 times that many ribbons ETA: I count 56 after browsing. Not to mention a few on the version II.

Begs the question, If your looking to ribbon should you really spend all the money on that lens. Im kidding too bad your 5D cant use that EF-S.
The reality is alot of people have the kit lens, and alot of good photographers with the same len can equal many ribbons for that lens.
But its still hilarious. |

Ribbons aside, I'd like something that will help me get clear shots in low light situations and also allow me to get closer than I currently can to my subjects.
It seems to me that either of these lenses might be good for indoor weddings? I know I'd want one with a longer reach as well, but I think wider is a priority for me at this point. |

If it's a matter of weddings, Canons generally have much faster & smoother focusing than Tamrons...

You may want to read the reviews on fredmiranda.com. Both lenses get overall good marks. The Tamron gets beat on a bit for loud, slow focusing and hunting for focus in low light. That would pretty much kill it for me because I expect a 2.8 lense to own any room, but maybe not for others. The Canon lens is USM and of course the IS is damn nice to have in low light.
Big price difference. My experience is you get what you pay for but that's me. |

| If you have the money, you get the Canon glass. You don't skrimp on glass if you don't have to. |

I'm really leaning toward the Canon for the focusing capabilities and the IS. I don't have the money, but it's just a matter of saving. I just need to know what I'm saving for.
Plus, once I know what I'm looking for, I can start keeping my eyes open for deals or sale prices, rebates, etc. |
