I admit it. I'm a DPC addict. :-(

But really ... I love to share photos. I love to look at other's photos. And I love good conversation about photos. What a great place! :-)

I also love to teach and help others ... and every now and then I get a chance to do that, and that, too, keeps me coming back.

One question, "where else would I go?"
07/25/2007 05:02:30 PM · #28
Consider then impact of your proposal:
The ribbon winners leave, so do those same people that write the tutorials!
The ribbon winners leave, so do those same people who respond to posts for âwhat am I doing wrongâ and they take your photo, fiddle with it, post it and list the processing steps for you.
The ribbon winners leave - and whatâs left? Mediocre comments/critiques from the same â how would you get better? â¦weâd be destined into photo purgatory!
The ribbon winners leave â and you have to settle for âtastingâ pudding when you could âtasteâ Crème Brûlée!

I have had the pleasure of ribbon winners helping me via pmâs, comments and plain old encouragement in side challenges. Some have taken the time to ask for a large file of an image in question â they edited it and then explained my shortcomings.

They recognize improvement and style development â even when we donât; they tell us so.

Apparently I have strong feeling about this matter LOL@me

Oh, and one more thing... if having 2 ribbons actually "proved" anything, I think I would take my ribbons and run. But they don't. I'm just "another photographer" on the site. And as Citadel expressed, there is still a lot of room to learn and grow.

In my experience, steel sharpens steel. Without having competition with the best there is to offer it will be a great deal harder for you to improve. They are there to show us what CAN be done on a consitant level by being creative and using your tools to the best of your ability. 2 or 3 years down the road of chasing the multi-ribbon holders you too may be pooping excellence and peeing ribbons. Until then... I'm just happy there here to help me to see things from a different perspective.

I can't even imagine NOT being here...

The problem isn't the Ribbon Winners leaving this place. It's so easy to win a Ribbon, and anyone can do that.

The true problem is the good photographers leaving DPC. The majority around here give no attention to their work and there are only a few DPCers giving support to them. It's so easy for a good photographer to find better places than here.

So, my answer to the question "Tell me, why do you stay?" is...
They stay because they are not good enough photographers. They are Winning Ribbons but there's a big difference between winning a ribbon and taking a good photograph.

I do it for a simple reason. The challenge topics keep that side of my brain active...initiating my eyes to think of a different aspect of the visual world. I enter in something different everytime. I would argue no one could ever identify my work mid-challenge, which is exactly how I like it.

You mean I am still here...

Note to self...

There is no proposal, and no debate, just conversation.

I have to quote this because I'm delighted with the imaginative language fireserpent used, and besides I agree with him.

If the good photographers go away, I would go too. It would be pretty dull around here with just us middle-of-the-roader types around.

Edited to get all my words typed.

Might I suggest you edit your claim? It is definitely NOT easy to win a ribbon, and it's NOT true that anyone can do it. You happen to find it easy because of your skill, but not everyone does.

Funny thing DPC.

A click of the shutter, in the right place at the right time, submitted to a challenge, scores high and is awarded a ribbon. With said ribbon comes a flood of new clicks, by other members, adding to favorites, expressing support & congratulations for winning, even years later.

Do it a dozen more times and one inches up the steps of the site's pedestal so to speak and a following develops. Sitting up on that multi-leveled pedestal now commands a certain level of quality clicks to keep the crowd pleased. Those quality clicks slowly fade away, as what once was pleasing to produce, feels sterile, with no soul, no life.

The shutter clicks now have a tougher crowd to please - one's own passion. for the art, for the story telling, for the real life that surrounds us. What once pleased me on my profile page, now, are little more than shoulder shrugs.

As an example, I'd replace my 5 top pics in my profile page ten times over with these for example:

(didn't realize till now how I favor the angles captured)

Scoring highly is a rush when an image moves me. I've had many score well, even ribbon, that are nothing more than a shutter click, but when it is more than a a movement of the index finger, when things work right to truly capture something driven by passion, and the voters agree with that passion, then it takes on new meaning. The success cannot be sweeter.

Those are the moments that keep me here.

I feel all proud now because I never really thought of myself as a "multi-ribbon winner". I guess much more often than not, I feel like an "also ran" or a "close, but not close enough" kinda dpc'er. So I stay to become a multi-ribbon winner :)

Oh. . .and I also sell my work and my photography services, but if I do too much of that. . .it starts feeling too much like work. What I love is taking photographs fitting a creative theme, and turning them into art and soul. And when one turns out good and hits. . .it is EXHILARATING. . .no matter how many ribbons you have!

I could feel the site's pedestal from day 1. And maybe that's why this place is initially intriguing. The newbie thinks to himself - I can do this, too. I can take photos this good. I want to be on the pedestal - the front page.

I think many folks are quickly dismayed. Others learn quickly, and with a fair bit of talent, begin working their way up.

But, ribbons or not, those who really stick it out realize it's not about the pedestal. It's about the relationships and enjoying the ride.

Same goes for life.

BTW - I'm a fan, Brad, for what it's worth. I've never seen you on the front page (before my time) but through the forums and participation with my site, you've shown yourself to be one of the most fun and helpful people around. Cheers!

But wouldn't it be cool if one day an image that moved you also moved everyone else? That's the day I'm hoping for.

my thoughts exactly......With over 15,000 image views. Better chance here then elsewhere. Art is for sharing.

Well, if you are still here as a multiply ribboned member, than why don't I have your web site on my bookmark list.

When I google certain people on this site, I don't see any professionally produced web site showcasing your work.

Why is that?

I mean, come on, DPC is a nice place to visit friends and all, and to see suck ass images like mine for the pity factor, but, why are there not more kick ass pro web sites for me to book mark from the elites here on DPC?

I may want to share your talent with other friends, and I may not want them to find your work on DPC, say.

Just curious.
