....why in the hell are you here?
I mean, you obviously have some sort of talent, multiple ribbons on your side panel mantle, bragging rights and all.
Why aren't you out selling your self, or your art, and why are you wasting your time here on a photography web site?
You obviously don't need advice on technique. You obviously know what the hell you are doing.
I know why I'm here. Because, I suck.
But, you don't suck. You are at the most a ringer, and the least competition for them that suck.
Are you here because your friends down the block don't talk to you, and here they do?
I don't get it.
Tell me, why do you stay?

Because I love to pat myself on the shoulder.
Besides that, I do sell my art and I still don't know everything about photography.
And it is fun, unless I get scores below 6. |

They are part of a government funded study to test the maximum extents of a vertical scroll bar.
If you want, I can write up a request for government funds to study why you suck. I'll just sneak it into some Congressional retirement benefits funding bill.
edit to fix my underfunded spelling.

I don't feel I'm good enough to sell myself or my art yet. I've only been doing this a year, all I know is from DPC and there's too much still left to learn here. I only know how to do like 30% of what my camera is capable of doing. Maybe less. I don't know even one universally used light set-up. I just put lights wherever I feel like and go with it. I NEED to stay or go to school. one of the two. |

Do you mean "pat yourself on the back"? or "Tap yourself on the shoulder"? Cuz one is self affirming, the other will just have you going round in circles. ...at least that's been my experience.

Well we do sell prints, through DPCPrints of course. That's a perk of DPC. Feel free to make us feel even better and buy some prints ;) |

While you're in there, could you get us feds a bigger pay raise next year?
Back on topic, it seems that some of the folks you're writing to have pretty much left. Kiwiness, for example, who's entered 10 challenges in the past year.
I don't really get your point, though. People who do well here should leave? Where should they go if they've found friends, fun, etc. here?

I stay 'cuz this place feels like home. 'Cuz I like to "teach", help people with photography. 'Cuz I get to hang out with strange people like you and Art. 'Cuz I like looking at pretty pictures, and ugly pictures, and wonderful pictures, and demented pictures. 'Cuz all my ribbons are happy accidents and I giggle whenever I stumble on one.

I think there have been a good number (though how many I don't know) of people who got their start on DPC, found out they have some talent, and started to make some money in photography. I can include myself in that category in a very small way. I sold a license for $500 last year and have maybe made a few hundred more in prints. Could I ever make a living? I don't think so. Not only do I not have the raw talent, I wouldn't want to spoil a cool hobby by trying to make it a living.
Look at Skip as a good example of somebody who discovered a career in photography, at least in part (a large part?) because of DPC. |

all of my ribbons were luck!
seriously.
One of them was when I was drunk on the back of a boat.
Another was in a challenge with only 97 entrants.
And the other was because of my cute dog and the funky colors that my walls are painted!!
no real photographic skill or knowledge was applied.
I find that when I use that, my scores suck :-) |

Laugh. That's almost word-for-word my response the last time someone suggested I change careers. I also said that if I worked at photography, I'd have to find a new hobby!

Kiwi's still here - just busy at work. He won a ribbon a few weeks back even ;)
I assume the OP is just looking for a reaction and to stimulate a little discussion about the benefits of this place for an accomplished photographer. Obviously DP and other modes of expression of your photography aren't mutually exclusive. it's safe to say that most of the very successful DP fotogs are also successful elsewhere. Though it's equally safe to say that success here don't necessarily mean a thang in the real world; what wins and what sells can be very different IMO. |

Aimee and I have done well here in challenges but we are trying to figure out our way into making a little money at photography. The types of shots we shoot for DPC are not what we expect to do in the real world. Though everything we have learned from DPC about our camera, shooting and editing will surely help us in our endeavor.
Oh yeah - I am an update button addict as well. |

I would have to say (not from experience of course) that unless you ribbon in every challenge there are still ways to grow and learn on this site even if you ribbon frequently. (Like stupid scalvert and his 3 ribbons at a time schtick).
Besides, I wouldn't want the ribboners to leave. If my best shots are good (and my average shots are average), how will I know if mine ever become great? Its also nice to beat the big shots. (again...I wouldn't know this from personal experience).
Its also nice to get feedback from your peers. Selling pictures to the uneducated masses is one thing but when the buyers know very little about the finer points of photography sometimes its nice to talk shop with others.
just my humble (really humble) opinion

Your assumptions are wrong on several levels.
Some of us are multiple ribbon winners that spread ours out over several years.
If I were to win 5000 ribbons on dpc, that doesn't mean I want to make money at photography. Maybe I'm really good at photography, but I'm even better at brain surgery.
And finally, maybe dpc is a game to a lot of people. Not everyone is here to get better. Not everyone is here to become a pro. Some people just like to "play."
Is that so bad? |
