The end (I hope) of the story:

I've just returned from Memory Express. The vid card was fried (the non-commissioned salesguy said once the artifacting appears that prominently you're out of luck). The chipset fan also gave out while i was there (the walrus has finally met his maker).

Soooo...I have now acquired a 1650pro dual output vid card, a separate WinTV Tuner/Capture Card, a new Zalman passive cooler for the chipset: all to the tune about about $700 including installation.

oh, and they threw in a new SB-800 speedlight for free :D

only head games. computer games are for people with a lot more time than I gots :)
