I am sure there is a logical answer and I know there have been discussions regarding adding copyrights, but I noticed there were many DQ's for adding text in the recent Portrait challenge. Why is this rule in place?

Because you are adding significant elements which were not present in the original photo -- same as you can't drop- in clip art or draw/paint in new shapes.

And if it has a signature or other defining information, you would be broadcasting who took the shot... |

Also, IMO it detracts from the photo and looks like crap. Who wants to vote on 400 photos that look like post cards.

Well, in the Postcard Challenge it makes sense, as in certain other challenges (Album Cover, Magazine Cover, etc.), and has been allowed as a Special Rule exception. |

Thats the only answer that needs to be given all answers about text go under the elemtns added rule, all copyright text goes under your identifying yourself. Case Closed! |

In other words, ours not to reason why, ours not to make reply, ours but to do and die.
Rules are inherently good because they are rules. It is their Platonic ruleness that makes them good. The whole point is to follow the rules that are set, whatever those rules happen to be. Questioning those rules destroys the harmony of happy rulefollowing.

besides, how can I use your images as free source material for my designs if you have your text all over them - this is much better this way... |

That depends somewhat on whether or not the questioner is open to accepting a reasonable answer, doesn't it?
In psychology, there's a manipulative communication technique known as "Phrasing an opinion as a question" which seems eerily analogous to most versions of this discussion.
"Why isn't text legal?" (what they say)
"Dammit, I want to put text on my photo!" (what they mean) |

You'll have to work it into the original composition. |

Jacko just put it in the title, maybe you should try that again. Of course it had negative results for him:)He got 109 1's
Original title: angry kitty ready for a scratch your eyes (intentional abstract; if you give me a 1 you're stupid)

Paul, I assure you I was sincere when asking this question and I accept your answer as reasonable. No passive aggressive manipulation behind the question - honest.
I apologize if my finding RainMotorSports' answer humorous offended you - that was not my intent.
