That's odd. Even with the flash in TTL mode?

Yes.

Rain, I'm gonna smack you right in your head at the next meet, or at least give you a hard time. ;-)

Besides It's a Sigma 500 DG Super E-TTL. If you're gonna be a snitch get your information right.

Melissa , I'd look at the Flash Exposure Compensation on the camera. Make sure it's at zero. If it is and is still blowing things out, set it lower.

Can I assume I find that in my camera's menu?

I think it'll probably be a button + a knob... but I dunno. It'll be in the manual. :-)

Yup, it's a button and a knob - Page 106 :-D

I bought a softbox from B&H. It's cheap/affordable & works wonders. For indoor use, it is worth every penny & then some. For short to medium focal lengths, the softbox has also been valuable.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

After using the LS for quite a while I have concluded, neither. There are much better, more efficient Light modifiers on the market, including (but not limited to) Gary Fong's own Whale Tail. Portable softboxes, pocket bounces (20/80), and home-made bounces do just as good or better.

But, if you are going with the LS, go clouded.

Leroy last September:
"Yes, the Lightsphere II, at least the clouded version, takes about two stops of flash exposure compensation, but that's pretty easy to compensate for. Any diffuser or bounce is gonna lose some light. I've tried everything from pocket softboxes to pocket bounces and IMO the LSII outperforms most other on-camera diffusion/bounce systems."

Have you reconsidered how well it really works or just found better diffusers?

Yes, after using it for a while in different circumstances, I've quickly fallen out of love with the LS. I must admit I was in love with the gimmick.

Where it fails:

High ceilings. With most of the light (which is lower power than straight bounce) going up, you need a low ceiling to bounce light. There is a chrome dome available but that is extra money.

Large rooms. You really want a smaller room (hopefully with white walls) to get the fill light from the sides with the LS. Not real convenient with wedding shoots.

Outdoors. The dome is just not big enough to be a good straight diffuser for fill. Not to mention it loses light out the sides. A softbox would be better.

Heat in Rapid shooting. It doesn't let the flash breathe and is thick, holding in heat. Add that to high Flash Exposure Compensation and it's a good combo for a melt down.

It's ok in some situations, but not so much as other options. I think having a few options (which are mostly less expensive than the LS) is going to be a better bet.

Where am I at now? Auto flashes wireless with umbrellas :-) If the flash is camera mounted a sheet of paper and a rubber band work just as well as the LS if I have a decently low ceiling height.

The Shell looks real promising. Ordering it.
