One bump for a fresh dose of options to leave me a quivering mass of indecision :D

I agree - I saw one on sale on B&H for less than 15K. Why not buy two?

Based on your teams statistics you should go with Canon! :-)

To the original poster, The XT and a Tamron 18-250 would be a pretty sweet start, IMO. It would give you the range you're used to and lens that's better than your P&S.

Id quote the autofocus problems. But i checked that dudes right up on the burst autofocus issues in some conditions. While yes it does seem to not perform as it should even the worst out of focus shot he showed, didnt seem all that bad at all. But when u pay close to 5 grand for a camera I guess it should work perfectly. If you saw DPReview says canon has a path they also say that guy says it wont be the fix people are hoping for.

If i had the cash id still buy it!

If you saw the Photozone.DE review of that lens it has less then a 4% barrel distortion from 18 to 35 from 35 to 250 no barrerl distortion (minor pincushion like the Nikon 18-200). Not sure if i read in that review or another its not sharp past 200. All to be expected.

I'm in Canada as well so when I wanted to upgrade to a dslr things got a bit tricky. Stupid ridiculous pricing (considering the dollars are within 7% of eachother now (last I checked) but products are still 20-40% more here).

Anyways, my wife surprised me and bought a D40 on the weekend. She said she caught a one-day sale on future shop's website. So, altogether for a d40 kit and two 2gig memory cards it was under $600 (with G.S.T!).

The moral of the story is: wait for a sale. There are enough retailers around that it shouldn't be a long wait. You can get your hard to hold and cheap-feeling XT for much cheaper. (Or, go with a sturdy feeling and easy to hold D40)

P.S I still like Canon, I just think Nikon wins in the entry-level department. No offense intended to any Canon users, their families and friends and/or employees/affiliates of Canon. =]

Well I thought we'd keep it in an affordable price range. ;)

Why would I want to "down grade" my current system?

:D

And the Nikon 18-200mm is $900 :( (I'm in Canada, remember)

Sigh.... some day, the good stuffs!

I wasn't suggesting you buy the 5D! I wanted you to see how different viewfinders looked. Something I didn't learn was significant on time until after I bought my second dSLR. I just thought if you were comparing SLRs, that's something you need to see for yourself to help you decide. In my opinion, it's a weakness of the Rebel XT (and maybe some other low end SLRs with Pentamirror design; but I didn't look at others).

And yes, the Nikon 18-200 is expensive, why I gave you the third party alternatives. (But I personally think the Nikon 18-200 may be worth it!)

Atropos, damn, I looked at Futureshop.ca on Monday instead of the weekend! :(

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone! :D

Okay, I did it! Sorta.... Well, I didn't do what I'd planned to do...

I bought...*gasp*... a NIKON.

Got the D40, at least to try for a couple weeks. There were pros and cons to both, image stabilisation being one con for Nikon, but I'll try it out and see how shaky my hands really are :)

I only got the kit, but I figure that should give me a good enough idea in two weeks, right?

And it gives me another 50 bucks to apply to a lens!

Congrats! That's great news. I know you will love it. It is small and has a lot of great functionality. Save up for some nice glass and you will be well on your way...

Oh,and add Nikon D40 to your profile!
