| So I am looking at a Canon 70-200 f/4L for 500 bucks. Is this a good deal at all? I have not done a ton of research and I dont have the time to so I figured I would ask the people that know the best. |

If it's new, that's a great deal. If it's used, it's still not bad if the lens is in very good condition. You can probably do better looking on Craigslist in a large metropolitan area. That's a very nice lens, so I'm sure you'll like it!

That would depend on if it's the IS lens or not. You can buy the non-IS at B&H for $579.95 brand new. The IS however is over $1000.

Good point, Linda. I assumed it was the non-IS lens.

In San Francisco, I think those usually sell for about $20-30 less on Craigslist. Not a huge difference, but you might see if you can haggle a bit. Or here's an option if you don't mind a refurbished lens:

Brandnew 70-200 f/4L from Beachcamera is only $569, it's free shipping and no tax if you're outside of New Jersey. I think with $69 more you'll get a brand new lens with the 1 year Canon Warranty. Should your lens have any problem, it's easier for you to deal with Canon Customer Service since you bought the lens new and from a Canon Authorized Dealer.

Good luck

| I am thinking about shooting some sports events and have been looking at the aforementioned lens and a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM for $400. Which one would you guys choose? |

Ditto...I just got mine and I couldn't love it more. Minneapolis huh? It's a nice place.
By the way, I got mine for $440 in fabulous condition. For $500 you might as well go new.

Get the L.
Be careful though. The red ring is addicting. |

It IS addicting, but the image quality is just that much better. I had the f4 and it really is a wicked little lens. I ended up with a 2.8 just because I shoot more indoors than out.
Mmmmmm......... LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL..........
*Drool*
ETA: If you can get it for 560(ish) new, then don't bother waiting around for a deal on a used one. I bought and sold mine for 525 and it only had one little pen mark on it.
