Hokay, I have a lovely image of a coil of rope on a dock. It's the line from the boat, hitched to the cleat, and then the free end is placed in a nice coil. what is that called? i cannot for the life of me remember, and i know i used to know...

can anyone help?

Possibly,
Flemish - to coil a line spirally, laid flat on deck, either for appearance or to make a mat (from Chapman Piloting)

Ah, someone just beat me to it. It's called a Flemish Flake, and each coil within is called a fake.

Okay, first off, it's not a rope, it's a line. Line refers to all fiber rope, natural or synthetic, while rope always refers to woven wire rope.

Laying a line down in a flat coil as you described it is called flemishing.

Is that what you were after?

Ah, it's 10:15 pm. However, on a bad day, I might be just as likely to reply at 5am. :)

Nice one! I left a comment.

BTW, you're not the only one having a stupid day. I should have realized that it's not 5AM for everyone in the world. My excuse is that it is 5AM for me, and that's waaaay too early for my brain cell. :)
