I changed my mind at the very last minute and changed my submission. I was just wondering how my orginal entry would have done. It has nothing to do with the shot being voted on. What would you have rated it?

I'd have given it a 2... pretty low, but then in my opinion there's not a lot of negative space. There's loads of texture and interest in all areas of your frame. I don't think your subject is interesting enough to warrant being the subject of a photo, and there's not enough contrast between the subject and the background. The lighting, and therefore the colours are a bit dull... I don't like the shadow that the subject casts. It's also not very sharp. So, you probably made the right choice! For future similar shots, experiment with taking pictures on different times of the day, and try lots of different lighting and angles.

I agree that there's not much differentiation between that subject and the background. The bark really doesn't feel like empty space. maybe somewhere around a 4

I'd have also given it a 2. I gave every image that was cropped simply to fit the challenge a 1, 2, or 3. This is one of those. Why have room on the right? What does it mean? Why's it there?

If the answer is "because the challenge is negative space" then it's not worth having the negative space.
