Greetings, suckers! It's been a week real world time (about a month or so desert time) and I'm pretty much settled until I move again in a month. The two most depressing things are internet access (it takes days to get anywhere - slower than dial-up) and the lack of cold or even cool water to wash your face or brush your teeth. Water is in tanks on the outside of the buildings so it's pretty much at ambient temperature plus heated by the sun. Work hours are pretty much those when you aren't sleeping. I kinda miss my down time to edit pics or check out what's posted here. Another year or six (desert time) and I'll get back to my normal routine!
Mean time, happy birthday, congrats, and all other salutations engendered by latest news posted. |

Sounds Like Heaven, if your a desert dweller. You will get through with your strength and spirit. Keep smiling.

happy belated, leah!
congratulations, julianne!
deb, the waterless beach will probably begin to work its magic on you. when i arrived in botswana, all i saw was the emptyness, after a little while, i realised how full that emptyness was. sometimes it was full of nothing, other times there were surprises.

Heh... magic not quite worked yet, but it's not quite as shocking as upon first sight. I even saw a dead weed down near some concrete blocks! :-)
Pod pictures. My lovely podspace (yes, they're metal storage boxes, neatly stacked) is complete with a folding camp chair, a little piece of carpet, a borrowed TV (which I do watch for the Tour de France coverage when I get a chance), and a nice lamp for reading, which I just knocked off the borrowed TV prior to coming here, and broke the light bulb to smithereens. Will have to go get another light bulb and hope the lamp itself survived the impact.
Hot here. And don't let anyone ever tell you there isn't much difference between 105 and 119. There's a LOT of difference. I can stay out in 105 for a while. Not so much at 119. I swear I think my hair will combust after more than 10 minutes.
I've yet to determine the rationale behind laundry and bathing. Both seem completely pointless, as long as one gets a couple of stick-up air fresheners for one's Pod.... :-)

Deb
Those are some beautiful pods. I am glad to here that you made it safely. Maybe we can persuade Langdon to give is the sand, box, and hot challenges...
Take care of yourself..

What we need is an "I Pod" challenge. Heh.
And joy of joys! I'm a test case for the install of internet in the Pods. They turned it on just so I could see if I could a) get a signal, and b) connect. No guarantee on how long this'll last, but it's sweet for the moment! Granted, I have to go back over to the trailers where I work, but I must say that this is WAY faster than the molasses version we have at the office. Way cool! (And then there's the part where I leave here in about a month and will be somewhere without access again.... Still joy for now!) |

Deb, I know sometimes in the military you can give an "address" that people back home can send care packages to. Do you have an address like that? Maybe Team Suck can send you Care Packages...

You guys are sweet!! I'm just using my normal Germany address and the folks there are supposed to forward stuff to me - this is because I won't be stationary, but will be doing the Desert Tour of 2007. Yes, I plan to take in at least two, and possibly three countries!
Not much that I need, really. I have all the essentials - socks, underwear, endless free bottles of water... and internet in my room for now. That's way cool!
If you do want to send stuff, send me a PM and I'll reply with the address. Bear in mind that nothing alcoholic or pornographic can be sent here, and that whatever is sent will be subject to rather high temps.

That reminds me of how I learned about winter after moving to Chicago a couple years ago. 25F feels downright balmy compared to 15F, and forget about -2F, and all of those temps are before the wind chill is factored in. Oh, how I long for the day when my wife gets into a residency program back in California..

I remember winters in Wyoming and Nebraska - the first day it gets above 32 and the sun comes out, people head out in shorts. :-)
Forgot to add on my last post - the things I miss:
My cats. :-(
The ability to go out and shoot.
Green!
My bed, my fridge, and my coffee pot.
But I have it very, very good here. My pod is air conditioned, the trailers where I work are air conditioned, and I have access to a vehicle to use on the post most of the time. We have dining facilities open three times a day, and vendors (such as Starbucks on this camp) that are open when those facilities aren't. I REALLY feel for the guys on patrols and in remote camps that are stuck out in this heat a lot more than I am and don't have access to the things I do.
And I get to look forward to another year or two in Germany when I get back from here, so it's all good! |

Hi all!
Neat pod pix Deb, and guess i better cancel that box o' liqueur chocolates I was going to send you :-)...
...Happy belated bday Blue Moon!...
...and I was GIVEN a camera this weekend, a Sony DSC-F717...given to me by that wonderful man who did the b/w portrait of me on my homepage, as he knew I was struggling to shoot macros...he said he put a lot of thought into it, so there you go! It's definitely seen some usage and needs some minor technical adjustments made (when I have the money, lol) but the macros I can take with it are just mind-boggling. (Mind, my mind does get boggled very easily). Helps too that he included a slew of fox closeup 58mm attachments, UV filter, cool stuff like that.
Now, time to get my ass in gear and enter some challenges, been resting on my laurels with Nightmare :-) And must try to get voting etc done.
Bye for now! |

Hi all,
Great to hear from you, Deb! I've been hinting at wanting to send you a package since before you left; I need to not be so subtle next time :)
Susan, can't wait to see the new macros; what an awesome gift!
Happy Birthday, Blue Moon (yes, late, I'm a bit behind).
Excellent jump, Christian, I've never gotten a good bump from the scrubber (though I've heard it can happen).
If any Team Suckers have time to comment on something for me, I've started a thread for comments on my new website (in draft version). Anyone who has time to take a look, it would be greatly appreciated. Thread is here.
'Nighty night, all, sweet dreams and don't let the bed bugs bite!
Best,
Rob |

Hi Rob, left a note on your thread...
I'm in for Street Photography, though it's not a conventional shot for that genre.
Gotta go play with new camera now, glad to see about 800 other users on this site have it!!! :-) |

Hi everyone. I've stumbled across some great learning sites recently:
The best explanation of HDR and tone mapping I've read
A whole slew of interesting tutorials about composition and lighting
I'm in for faceless emotion, with probably my lowest-scoring shot in months, but I like it! :)
