I need to take some new studio shots -- I've bought a few new toys. But I'll wait until my seamless vinyl backdrop gets here next week :D I'm hoping to leave paper rolls behind forever, but I'll just have to see how reflective the vinyl is - I've heard you can paint the wall portion of it with white wall paint to cut down on shine... I'll update when I see it :)

Neil, what are the dimensions of that room? |
Sorry Ken, I didn't see this before. The room is about 5 metres wide and 7 metres deep!

Ok so 4 months later I remember to update... lol
This is the vinyl backdrop showing. Its huge and has become my bottom layer that never leaves the floor. All of my muslins are on cables and slide over the vinyl. You'll notice I now have 4 ABs. Just got the new one yesterday and I'm thrilled. I can now evenly light the bg without sacrificing a light somewhere else. I still use my 6' reflector when I need just a bit more flexibility. I did a quick session in here today with a friend's daughter; this pic was moments before it.
My favorite two models moved to Tokyo 2 years ago and will be back for a visit for 3 weeks starting this evening. I can't wait to get them both in the studio - this will be a fun visit. :)

What kind of stand is that in the front left? I LIKE it!

That's the AB heavy duty light stand with a $40 set of casters. Got it yesterday too, ordered with the new AB400, but knew I'd use it on the AB800 because a light weight stand isn't really safe with that large softbox. The new light is on the front right with the stand that used to be on the 800.

Yeah, I was looking at that softbox too :-) More lighting upgrades are in my near future.

I guess I should have read this before commenting on your picture. :) I recently went on Alienbees site and put everything I wanted into a shopping cart. The total came to about $3 under $1k. Since the 5D was a considerable chunk of change, the new AB gear will have to wait a while. But a 4th strobe, giant folding softbox, ringflash, softbox attachment for said ringflash, and some other odds and ends will be coming hopefully before the end of the year. In the meantime, congratulations on such a great studio setup. And unlike my studio space, you don't have to drag a ton of furniture out of your living room to set it up! |

James - I mentioned below, but the stands are all AB light weight light stands except the one front left, that one is the AB heavy weight light stand with a set of casters. The heavy weight one is for the weight of the large softbox, which really shouldn't have been on the light stands in the first place.
Don - Thanks for the comment - my 5,000th comment recieved. I think your prize is in the mail! ;) good luck on your new studio toys. Seems the "want list" is literally never ending, but that's okay, its all about progression and flexibility.

I should have been more precise. For your backdrops. Is it one similar to this:

oooooooooooooh! No, I have one of those and hate it with a passion. Its great if I'm on location, but in the studio it just takes so much space for its feet. My muslins are on cables (plastic coated wire cable) which is attached to eye-hooks on either wall. Like a big clothes line. Total investment in 3 cables, probably $15 :)
Edit: The paper rolls and vinyl are on a cheap-ass wall-mounted system that I ebayed ages ago. Its horrid and I've rigged it with some Cindiology to make it work for me.

I have a place upstairs, that would make a wonderful studio. But it is over taken by Nascar crap, that is not selling at the moment. Like 20 of those big plastic totes filled and 10 or so wall length shelves with odd ball stuff from nascar cards to beer steins and we have go rid of half of it in the pass 5 years. Looking for buyer for the rest...so I can move in :-) and take over. |

I gave you your 5,000th comment? Woo hoo! I feel like I won the lottery! That's so cool--I'll hit 5,000 sometime on Tuesday. Tuesday of the year 2087, that is... :) As for my prize, I'll take an AB800 in green please. :) |

Awesome, Cindi - don't forget to post shots you take with your sweet setup. Lighting is one of my weakest areas, so I'm keenly interested in the shots and the setups. Thanks for sharing! |

This was shot yesterday using the same light set-up you see in the pic I posted (only I moved the bg lights back a bit). I would show one from the session I mentioned, but right now it would be considered an outtake. :)

Inspired by this thread and some others to further investigate studio lighting, I've come across some great websites with tutorials and setup shots which others here may find useful:
Photoflex Lighting Tutorials: Great studio tutorials, including comparison images and shots of the setup. Shamelessly advertising Photoflex products, but what do I care - the information is free.
The Strobist: On Assignment: A photojournalist's blog about lighting for his daily assignments. Advocates a portable, inexpensive equipment kit, and has a great lighting 101 section. I found these entries (here and here and here) particularly interesting.
DIYPhotography.net seems to have some useful stuff - I like this custom bokeh article.
With so much junk to wade through on the Internet, I love finding sites with actual useful information on them. If you have any gems, please feel free to post them (I don't think Cindi would mind given the thread topic, but I suppose she could ask us not to if she'd prefer) or PM me. |

Hey Jeff. Didn't spot this yesterday. Of course I don't mind the addition to the thread. I'm a big fan of sharing info and gathering good info into one place so its easy to find. :)

Ok we are starting on the home studio this weekend. I have a question though.
I am looking for a stand system to support some paper backgrounds I will buy. I am not planning on moving it around and will only use it for paper. Question is
Should I buy this System
or buy the Cheaper version with this Expansion system so I can hold more than one roll of paper. I won't need to go higher than 8 ft becasue that is the height of my ceilings. Any one use these?

Oh, I missed that post. If I were gonna choose between those I'd DEFINITELY get the multi-roll one, cause changing a 9' or 12' roll of paper isn't much fun and when clients are in you don't wanna have to do that.
