Also note that Lions and tigers and bears (oh my) that reside in any zoo are not to be considered "Wildlife"... one must go trudging across to tundra mile after mile to capture "Wildlife" for a challenge... :) |

OT, but try a smaller unsharp mask radius. =) It's usually not the amount, but the larger radius makes it too obvious and overdone. |

I entered (and scored decent) a bug macro. To date it's the only one I've really taken of a bug :p |

What do you recommend? My current settings are Amount 50%, radius 1, threshold 0. Sometimes I do this twice. What is considered a normal range of numbers? I really wasn't kidding when I said my vision isn't very sharp. |

Depends on a lot of things, but primarily the image size.
At my native 8MP (3400x2300), I usually use between 1 and 4 as the radius, and can often get away with 100-250%. I often apply a layer mask and sharpen selectively.
For final sharpening at 640x480, usually I use between 0.4 and 0.7 as the radius, between 40-80%.
Sorry to have diverged so far off topic. =) Umm... I probably sharpen my flowers and bugs this way, too! |

Back to the topic, though....
People have been complaining about bug/flower macros for years, and they will next week/month/year/decade too.
Run through about 100,000 pictures voting, viewing, commenting, blahblahblah, and you generally stop whining and move on.

AJ, I'm with you, but I also see the other side. People want to do well in the challenges, so if they feel they're at their best with a macro of the 999,999th flower that's posted to DPC, they feel that's their best shot. Also, when people try to step outside their boundaries, the results can be pretty ugly sometimes :) My Hair shot for example...

Of my top 6 scores, two are macros, one's flowers, 4 are repeating patterns... I don't consciously plan to take one style of shot frequently, it just happens sometimes.
Also, many people ARE limited, whether by time, health, money, whatever, in what/where they can shoot. Most of us don't have studios, many of us don't even have an empty-ish corner to appropriate for setups. We just do the best we can with what we have available, and sometimes that's just the flower in our garden, or the bug we found on it, sorry! |
