How should I size the images for a model to put them on a cd that she will purchase? Say, if she wanted to print the images from the cd, what will be the best way to size them for them to look great on 8x10 without losing quality. ( I shoot with a nikon D80 and I use Photoshop Elements 5.0) Please help me out before I give her this cd!!!

Personally i would leave them at full size.
Surely the bigger the better for printing resolutions.

Leave them at full size, but crop for 8x10.

OK, how do I do the 8x10 crop in photoshop?

The easiest way is to use the rectangular marque too. On the Style drop down menu at the top, change it from Normal to Fixed Aspect Ratio.

Choose the crop tool and set the height and width so the aspect ratio is 8 x 10. When you drag the cursor over the image the crop box will then have the right aspect ratio.

so use the crop tool and view the numbers up top until it reaches 8x10, sorry if am sounding elementary. I did a cd for a model and I resized the images to 640 dpi or whatever just like the rules are in DP.
Do I need to do the cd again!!!

Leave the dpi box empty.

If the shot is vertical set the height to 10 and width to 8. For horizontal do the reverse.

Once you've cropped then you can do the resize to whatever max dimension you want.

so delete the number already in the box?

yup.

Otherwise, resampling will happen if you don't crop to the max within the image.

make sure to put 300 in the resolution box, otherwise I think it defaults to 72 and that is way to low of a number for a paying customer.

Just curious because I have never done the method below - what benefit if any is there to doing that crop versus how I normally do it which is to use the selection tool with a ratio of 8 wide 10 high (no inches, no px, no anything but the numbers) and then using that to crop the right proportion? Doesn't the 8inx10in method force you into getting a 100% crop of whatever you are looking at?

Without the dpi populated it's the same as your method.

If you put a number in the resolution box then PS will resample your selection to the size specified. This is why the box is left blank. If you need to resample afterwards you have much more control using image/resize.
