A friend's daughter was recently married and had no professional photographer. He sent me some of the shots he took (some aren't bad!) and I asked if I could play with them, and he said, "Yes PLEASE".

Mostly I want to learn PS, but I'd also like to be able to give him back some half-decent shots.

Now, I don't know at all how I should have done this, but this is basically what I did;
-Created a new image and extracted each grandparent and moved to the new image. That left me with 3 layers- 1 for each person and one for background.
-Added colour, texture and shadow to background, then flattened image.
-Cloned inside of glasses to show new background through.
-Did normal editing (levels, USM, etc.)
-Ran a small blur tool around the edges of the figures to blend them better.

Then I realised that I probably should have blurred the background some before flattening and sharpening, so I had to selectively blur.

How does it look, what else needs doing, and were there easier/better ways to do what I did?

(Btw, I'll edit the original too, so he has a shot in the original context)

you are on a good path but does he mind losing the entire background? Does he want them to appear like studio shots with a background?

I think instead of totally losing the background just apply a nice gaussian blur to it so that the people aren't so much there. I do like what you've done, but wasn't exactly sure what he is going after...you may not either.

Well, his parents aren't the type to sit for portraits, so I wanted to give him something a bit closer to that, but I'm also going to do another with the original background, as you suggested.

I'm mainly wondering if the edit looks plausible, and if I'm using the right techniques to get there?

From what I can tell with the small view your technique is ok. Looks like a good extraction from the original but I don't know about the removal of the background and the moving the subjects closer together. With her looking to the left and him looking to the right it makes the image unnatural to me. Also her being in front of him and being larger gives away that the picture has been altered.

I have not seen the large original to know what could be done. But I don't think going for a studio type edit with the current lighting and positions of the subjects are going to be the best way to go. I would try to keep the background but crop, making it more appealing, and do some small touch ups.
Just an observation.
Good Luck.

Indeed, the technique looks pretty good. But the dark glasses also give something away.

I don't know if it'd look good/natural, but you *could* pull in some of those trees/sky in the bkg, blur them a bit, and drop them behind the couple. =) That way, they're still in setting and outside (glasses).

I'm not sure I understand this. If she were in front, hence closer, wouldn't she naturally look bigger? (Btw, she IS bigger, probably a good 4-5" taller than he is.

I tried pulling in trees but I don't know how. I couldn't make them look right. That's the kind of thing I'm trying to find out how to do.

Thanks, all, for the comments.
