I'm finding that the 24-70mm f/2.8 is plenty wide enough for most usage. I think that lens would amaze you.

thank you Hankk, i don't really know what i mean by "wide" and since i only take portraits i know i don't need it super-wide anyway
i just wanted a lens to come closer to a subject, just because i want to experiment with angles in my little studio, and i don't have much space here.
i really start thinkin 24-70 would be wide enough for me.
i should try it somehow

24-70 is also 'macro' so you can get pretty darn close and still lock focus.

hey Svetlana,
I have the 17-40 and really love it, i know how much you like your portraits and i think i understand what you are after. Have you thought about the 28mm 1.8 or the 24mm 1.4L prime lenses? I'm thinking of getting the 28mm as its a lot cheaper. I say this because 17mm is very wide on the 5d and close up does distort.
Also its that little bit faster for your low light shots and you will still have a LOT of change to buy something else :)

I bet if you were able to add up how much money pro photographers made from each lens they owned you would find the 24-70mm is number 1. I call it the "moneymaker".

I suppose that would depend on the photographer.

I doubt that a wildlife photographer or an architectural photographer will get much revenue using a 24-70 zoom.

The 16-35 f2.8 is amazing. I'll have to take some more photos with it now that Brin has knocked me out of top spot.

If I ever make a switch to 5D I'd get 16-35 f2.8 II. I played with first version and it was great.

Good luck with your choice.

You're welcome!

I'll guess that you know about distortion of the features from being too close, and that keystoneing is more noticeable at shorter focal lengths.

If you still have the Nikon, try the 18-55 at different focal lengths, and see what focal length you need for a full length portrait and divide that number by 1.5 for the 5D.

If you mostly take one sort of portrait besides a headshot (e.g. full length, 3/4, bust, ...) , you may find a prime is better both in IQ and cost. Perhaps even two primes, like a 50mm and a 35mm would be cheaper than a 24-70mm, depending on which primes you choose.

yes, i've been looking at my nikon photos, and 18mm looks wide enough.
yeah, i really want one prime: 85 mm 1.2, or 135mm f2 is also very very nice:P

i stil can't understand, what does 18mm on d50 equal to on 5d?
07/18/2007 05:02:58 AM · #37
Well, lets' say, for example, that you find that on your nikon, you need a focal length of 30 for a full length portrait. well, the 30 that your lens is showing, is actually 30*1.5=45 focal length. So, on your 5d, you will need a lens with 45 focal length in order to get the same image.

So the 18-55 mm lens on your nikon is the equivalent of 27-82.5 mm on 5d. Since 18 is wide enough for you on the nikon, then 24-70 for the 5d should be enough.

I hope is more clear now.

18mm on D50 is like 27mm on the 5D. If you aren't in need of super-wide, then do try the 24-70. It is optically better than the 17-40 by a significant margin, and it's f/2.8. 24mm is definitely wide on the 5D.

yes, 2.8 is very nice.

so i've been reading reviews everwhere in internet lately,
and everyrone is talking about how perfectly sharp 85mm 1.2 is
what camera settings do they all have?
i shoot raw, image style neutral: no sharpness, contrast - nothing
and then use raw shooter essentials and edit in PS.
i sharpen only at the very end, after resizing
