Okay, so I'm planning to apply to the photography program at my university in fall, but they don't provide any guidance on what I should include in my portfolio of 8 and only 8 photos. They only guidance they're willing to provide is:

"Portfolios will be evaluated in terms of the applicant's level of conceptual and technical skills, understanding of composition and form, extent of experimentation and innovation, as well as effort and commitment."

With all the expert knowledge here at DPC, I'm looking for suggestions on what kind of things I should be sure to include in such a portfolio. I'm entirely unsure how to communicate my 'effort and commitment' but I'm hoping with a good amount of variety I might be able to cover this.

Thanks so much in advance!

Can you post your best work and we can help narrow it down with suggestions?

It may be a little different, but we just got done getting my daughter into art school. I know the standard there was her "BEST WORK". They did not necessarily want variety. Just her "BEST WORK". If your best work show all the things that they want, than you should be oaky.

I agree. Even though I havent had to really show a portfolio, when I do show my work its always what I think are my best...That being said, they will probably be looking for a basic understanding of "rules", choosing the right composition and angle, knowing when an image should be color or B&W, sharpnes, etc..

Thanks so much for the input! Maybe some of you wouldn't mind elaborating in a less abstract way.... Unfortunately, I'm afraid that I'm not really in tune with the artistic vibe-thing. I know that, in addition to being entirely irrelevent, my opinion of my best work is probably entirely different than anyone with any actual 'taste' or 'education.'

I confess, I'm also really frustrated with this process. I think it's entirely unfair to ask students to prove they know the material prior to teaching it to them.

What I guess I want is some quantifiable properties that I can practices/produce/look for that don't require me to be very artistic to figure out.

I've also put a set together on my flickr page of things I'm considering including if anyone really wants to look. I don't think I take enough pictures of people, though. Here it is.

Thanks so much for any help/guidance/suggestions!

Edited to add: I WAS at the art school here for half a semester but quit because it was terrible (infantile) - they were nice, though... I brought in a selection of things and they picked what they were looking for.

Good luck with the whole application process. You shouldn't need any luck though your photographs are wonderful. My top three on you flickr page would be Hair, the sunflower and the heart on fire.

Please keep us posted on what shots you choose and how everything goes.

Thank you so much for the encouragement! It's a tough thing - I wish they were willing to help out, but I suppose part of the test is picking images yourself (or with the appropriate resources).

Fence, Cell Phone, the Orton'd Sunflower, and the outtake from hair are my picks. I think the Sunflower has good color lighting and composition but also shows your ps abilities. The Fence shows an artistic view of an ordinary thing and its also clearly focused with good colors. The cell phone gives a theme and the hair one is not only artistic but also great lighting and a pretty cool shot to boot. Don't know if its fixable but the only thing I'd like to see different on any of those is the hair one. If there was a tiny bit of light on the opposite side of your head to see the outline of the top of your head. You just fade right into the background on that one but I still think it would be good to use because even if you can't fix that one it gives them something to say wow this is a great shot It just needs this one thing done (if they even agree with my take on it) and we can teach her... She has a lot of potential. I think that's what they're looking for is potential and you have that.
