Must say yes to happening after sensor cleaning since I clean fairly often and it happened recently. BUT, I only use Rocket blower for cleaning this one. Could the blower have 'bent' the sensor? That seems amazingly unlikely. Haven't tried mirror lock-up, but will run some more home tests in the morning.... gotta do something while I wait for Canon to open on Monday. ;)

Can you clean it again? Can't hurt now, can it. |

Before I set it on the shelf I cleaned it once more, tried 2 other lenses, then tried a friend's lens. That was probably the 3rd cleaning since it started showing the whatever.
On a dark or busy background you hardly notice it, but on some shots you can't miss it.... like the surfers.

Cindi,
I'm happy to hear it'll be fixed soon, but think of the opportunities here for putting a rainbow in those shots :-) LEGALLY! We can't "introduce elements" but we can color in existing elements; I see a Free Study entry titled "Over the rainbow" on this one:

If you were a Canon Pro Services member you'd get it back in 3. I just had the shutter and shutter release replaced in my 30D, although not under warranty. But the repair was discounted, very relieved to spend only $144. Mine has really been through the mill. |

Glad it will be fixed. Both times I sent my 30D in I had it back in 7 days flat. They shipped back to me NDA. |

Sooooo, the update on my camera repair.......
I shipped it to Canon on June 23rd and it was delivered on June 28th.
On July 5th I got email saying it had been assessed and would be repaired under the warranty.
On July 9th I got email saying it would NOT be repaired under warranty "REVISED ESTIMATE: DUE TO HIGH SHUTTER RELEASE COUNT, UNIT RE-ESTIMATED FOR PARTS AND LABOR. PLEASE RESPOND TO NEW ESTIMATE." and a bill for $361.00
On July 10th I call the service center - are you telling me Canon will not honor its warranty because I USED THE CAMERA? - guy puts me on hold for 1/2 hour, then says he'll call me back.
Later on the 10th (6 hours later) I call service center again, woman puts me on hold for 15 minutes, then says the Service guys have left for the day and she'll call me in the morning - SHE PROMISES....
Midday on the 11th - I call the service center again. Each time I have to explain the whole situation, camera is under warranty, camera has not been misused or abused, why are they not honoring the warranty?..... this time woman puts me on hold for 1/2 hour.....shocking, eh? Anyway, she finally comes back on the line and says the repair WILL be covered by the warranty and I should have it back in a week. I ask for it to be expidited since its already been gone 2 weeks and I ask for the "we will repair under warranty" thing in writing!! She says she'll expidite the repair and sent an email immediately. Whew!
Now we wait.... again.

That's incredible, except not completely incredible. Look at car warranties: 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first... Like that. No company can really be expected to warrant their product for extremely high usage rates. But yes, I know that Canon doesn't have that disclaimer in their warranty, and the number of people who actually shoot that much is pretty limited, but...
So what I am saying is I can understand their trying to weasel out of it, sort of... I imagine most people just pay, and if anyone pushes it they cave in and do it for free for ya :-)

Shutter life is (according to Canon) around 100,000 actuations and my count is 58,000 - so not excessive... well not really excessive. :)
I'm glad I kept pushing them. Like you, Robert, I'd guess most people just pay it.

| Holy crap - half the rated actuations in under a year?! I hereby declare that: mildly excessive. =D
Indeed, stick to your guns, Cindi! |

I can understand a stupid, fly-by-night company trying to screw over the customers to save a little money.
I can't understand a major corporation that values their business reputation doing it.
Assuming this wasn't an honest mistake, this is a clear case of penny wise and pound foolish. As demonstrated specifically by her high usage, Cindi is a devoted fan of this camera and will probably be a long-term customer.
Pissing her off to save a few hundred dollars risks losing thousands of dollars of future business.
Reminds me of my neighborhood Ford dealership, to whom we'd brought our car for every service. They refused to help me out on something, and I've never gone back. Savings to them: maybe $1000. Lost business from me alone: several thousand dollars, plus I'll never buy another car there, plus I've badmouthed them to everyone.
Speaking of which, never do business with Koon's Ford in Falls Church, VA. *wicked grin*

Hell, if you were under by that much on the rated shutter life, then for sure they owed ya. I was assuming you'd gone over 100K in a year. In fact, I'm a little bummed you didn't :-)

That blows on one end but is good that it was still under! If you got it back sooner lol ID tape the shutter release down in continous and let ti shoot away in the smalelst jpeg size and highest manual shutter speed.
Take it back in "Quick the warranty is about to expire!"
