I have a Nikon D70 and want to produce good quality enlagements 30 x 20 and above. I was thinking of buying a D200, but would this give me better quality prints at the 30 x 20 size?

If anyone has any experience of printing the large size prints from digital I would appreciate their comments.

Am I right in thinking that simply buying the camera with the largest megapixels, may not mean the best quality print enlargement?

THANKS

Enlargement quality is ultimately a reflection of megapixels. However, you have to have a good copy to start with. A 10MP P&S with an inferior lens and noise profile is going to produce a much worse 20x30 than a 10MP dSLR with a professional lens and excellent noise profile.

Once you get to quality lenses and sensors though, megapixels is what is going to determine the bulk of your quality at very big enlargements.

To print a good-quality image you want a minimum of 4500 x 3000 pixels (150 dpi), but the quality of those pixels is more important than the number. A high-quality, low-noise image can be upsampled if necessary. If you can get to 300 dpi that's better. I'm pretty sure either of the cameras you mention will work.

I've actually printed 20 x 30 prints originally taken with my 2MP Olympus which came out OK.
