So, I've always had pretty good lens. I've either bought prime or the cheap L lens.
I think I need to slum it a bit and find a really crappy lens to show me what people are talking about with problems like:
Soft edges,
barrel distortion,
fringing
So, what's the worst lens Canon makes? I don't want to hear about the 3rd party models. |

| This will probably get a lot of people angry and get them to post photos taken with it trying to defend it, but the worst I've used was the 18-55 kit lens. |

i guess i would have to agree only because thats all i have, just have never been able to justify spending that kinda money for more expensive lenses as much as i would like to, since i dont do this for a living, but i do feel limited by this lens for sure |

Almost any lens without "L"
Exceptions are the EF-S10-22 (Awesome lens, but doesn't work on the 5D)
All the macros are good.
50mm 1.4 is sweet, so is the 50mm 1.8, but not as
85mm 1.8 is a good performer for the price and a heck of a lot cheaper than the 85mm 1.4L
I hear good thinks about the DO series, but never used one, but then they are as pricey as the L series.

Of all of my lenses, my kit lens is by far the worst. I never use it. I have a cheap Tamron lens I got off eBay for around $50. Everyone told me, "Don't buy it! It's a bad lens!" But, it out performs my kit lens.
My Canon28-135mm IS lens is my best lens, and I rarely use my other lenses. Of course, that's partly because I need to replace my Nifty Fifty. |

haha, as soon as I saw this I thought, "The kit lens!" It's a marketing strategy; sell the camera with the worst lens you make, and everyone will feel they have to upgrade.

I've not used a bad lens yet.
You can get nice sharp results with them all.
*Edited to sound less big headed, i meant anyone can get good results*

| The kits lens (18-55) bites! I've even had it in for legitimate repairs and it came back still sucking! LOL. |

Even some of canon's kit lenses arent bad enough to say HORRID. If you think their that bad then you havent seen a BAD lens. Id say you might get enough barrel distortion (3%... 4% would be better lol) to please you but not enough corner softness and chromatic abbertions or fringing to please what i think hes thinking.
You dont want after market glass what you really need is some old FD mount glass from an aftermarket company thats not apo corrected and has an extreme zoom range on it...
But what your looking for is a Canon OEM EF lens, its a toughy even their kit lenses are better then the crap flying around the aftermarket or 20 years ago..... |

Some of the early film EOS kit lenses like the 28-80 F/4.5-5.6 are pretty sucky... They make the efs kit (18-55) lens look like a quality bit of gear IMHO.

I would have to say the worst Canon lenses I have used was the 75-300mm 4.5-5.6 IS USM lens, This lens had unusual softness to it. I bought it in my more ignorant days when I didnt know any better when I thought a lens was a lens.... It was soft in 60% of apretures at various focal lengths and didnt do well in anything but "good light".
The second worst I have shot with I must agree with everyone else and say the 18-55mm Kit lens.
Just my 2 cents,

If I remember correctly the canon kit lens won a challenge only about a week or two ago (the Wheres Wally challenge IIRC).

Hmmm, Like I said maybe those were in a good quality of light or maybe mine was just really sucky. Either way, that is pretty much my opinion of the 75-300mm lens. Not saying you can not get a decent photo out of it, just saying that you need to be extremely selective in the focal lengths and apretures you shoot in to get a decent photo out of it.
Sorry,
Rich |
