The only zoo in Connecticut is less than 20 minutes from my house, and I've been fortunate enough to get some great shots of the animals there. I was going to try for some shots of their new wolf cubs on July 4th, but for some reason decided not to go. If I had, I would have been pulling into the zoo right about the time THIS happened. There is now a makeshift memorial right outside the fence.

Apparently the family only lived a mile or so away, so they could have walked. :-(

Awe Shann, that's tragic indeed. Wow, four of them and nobody got out. Breaks my heart.

dang, i've been hearing about that on the news off-and-on this week, had no idea it was so close to you. tragic is the right word.

as a reminder, every car should have one of those glass punch tools. nina equipped our cars after that incident down in that canal in florida nearly 10 years ago...

Funny you should mention that... I recently purchased one of those very recently and tested it on the window of an old truck and can attest to the fact that they truly are very effective.

Is that an automatic center punch? It will take out a window in a second. Just press and pop.

Also remember where its at, and make sure its readily available. Will not do you much good if you are scrummaging through a console with a ton of crap in it.

Sad story. :(

I read somewhere once that those glass breakers are much less effective when a car is submerged in water. I can't remember if that's assuming water is both inside and outside or just outside. It certainly can't hurt to have one though and most likely will work better than your elbow or fist.

I would think it would be just as effective to roll the window down, keep your head while the car fills up, then swim out.

And before people start saying power windows don't work underwater, I don't believe it. I've seen submerged cars (at least on TV) with headlights that work for a long time.

easy to say that now, when your adrenaline is pumping like that and all the thoughts that are going through your mind i bet you'd forget, and plus with all the pressure pushing on the window i doubt the dinky window motors would be able to pull the window down

I wonder if mythbusters has ever looked at something like this. Seems perfect for them.

i remember, they were testing to see if when you had a window open a crack and submerged the car if you could open the door under water (which you can't). They tested both the little pin tool and the hammer like one and both of them worked with flying colors.

Interesting stuff. The Mythbusters did do all these tests. While they found that the electric window can definitely operate underwater, the water pressure (as noisemaker stated) was too much for the mechanism and it would not open.
