Of course it matters what your subject is. It matters even more how you present it in the photo, though. If bright colors suit it, then a photo that presents it that way will be effective. If it really works in B&W or a duotone with another color, same story.
There's some things you just can't make an appealing photograph of, but with most things you just need to find the right way to do it in order to make people like to look at it. |

It doesn't matter what your subject is, but what you do with it. |

My point exactly and it's a winning combination here... |

Actually, I think what I meant is that it shouldn't matter :) |

Nope, it doesn't matter here at all. Make it shinny and pretty and you get a ribbon here... ;-) |

I look forward to seeing your work on the front page next month.

And, ummm, three of the top five blue ribbons showing on the home page right now are decidedly monochromatic. Not colorful at all. |

While Good Nudes and Landscapes get my vote, yeah I tend to vote higher when its crisp and colorful. |

Unless you're jjbeguin, e301, or Goodman. Seriously, though... appealing images are often pretty (duh). That doesn't mean that color and sharpness are only things that matter, though. BECAUSE the subject really matters, you can ribbon with dull colors, grain, blown highlights, soft focus, etc.* Heck, you could even ribbon with a picture of a nasty housefly because it's a compelling subject to look at!
*I've tested this, and I'm pretty sure.

That's only part of it.
Whatever story your image tells, it has to tell it quickly and in no uncertain terms.
Subtlety does not win ribbons. |

It kinda does on very rare occasions. I'd have to say that my couple with the umbrella in the rain shot (yellow ribbon - woo hoo!) isn't exactly in your face, in color, or ridiculously tack sharp. |

Just look at the winner of the June free study. It's an f'n ugly ass maggot with wings of all things, yet it's tack sharp and has pretty colors.
Don't get me wrong. That photographer knows what he is doing and deserves ribbons, but not that ribbon, my God!
OK, rant off, but I think I now know what to do to win a ribbon here. |
Well, you are certainly entitled to your opinion...but Wow! I am struck by your hostility towards that image.
#1. It is not a maggot, it's a fly.
#2. Without maggots and flies, this earth would be covered with slowly rotting carcasses and stinking garbage; which I would consider quite ugly.
#3. I love that image as much as you hate it, and that balances things out;^)
IMHO, your images are technically and artistically superb and I'm really quite puzzled by this whole thread. It's hard for me to believe that you can't recognize the elements of design that appeal to the voters of DPC, considering that you make such good use of them in your work. It's true that color and sharpness are crucial, but please tell me you don't really think that's all it takes? If your opinion of the voters is so low, then why would you be interested in receiving a ribbon anyhow?
I think you should read "The Unauthorized Beginner's Guide to DPC" and be thankful that your photography is so good!
