Uh, speed read all the portrait threads real quick?
Might want to give some more info, indoor/outdoor and how large that group is.
If you can, find an overhang of a building for some nice soft shaded light for the small family shots. Try to get them out of the direct sunlight, but not directly against a wall if you can. An open doorway with dark background works well too. |

it'll be outside, and i'm having trouble figuring out which way to position people, because when they're toward the sun they squint (duh) and away from the sun there are shadows |

Watch your light source.
Consider a flash to fill details.
If you have, or can beg, borrow, or steal a long lens, they make candids a lot easier.
Be very aware of the background, no trees growing out of heads, etc.
Shoot in RAW. If you have a hard time nailing exposures, it's a lot more forgiving.
Have fun. If you're enjoying yourself, it'll help others to relax.

Go buy about 10 sheets of white foamcore and something to prop them up with, position the people so they're not so squinty, and then use your new refectors to light them.
If there is going to be a park there with a large shelter, go get some large, cheap, black or white sheets and some duct tape (I like the black Gorilla tape, holds better IMO), place the sheets up behind them and them under the shelter. Pay attention to the angle of the sun. You might need a step-ladder.
