Something Has Been Eating My Peppers!

It is with sadness I must report... Howie has left the peppers.

This was the last shot I got, yesterday evening.

When I took the dogs out around 6:30 this morning I couldn't find Howard on the peppers. I thought maybe I was just too tired to spot him so didn't fret, but went out again an hour later and still no sign of Howard. I've now searched the plants 3 times, looked under the plants in the pot as well as on the ground around the pot.... no Howard. I saw him just after sundown yesterday so I guess he either burrowed in last night, somehow fell off of the plants onto the lawn & wandered off or became a snack for some hungry preditor during the night. :(

Farewell, Howie!

Lori - I shot all of those with the Canon 100 2.8. Its minimum focusing distance is 6 inches and I get right in there. I used my 580 flash with Gary Fong diffuser on all of them, camera on tripod, remote release to avoid movement. I also added a white cardboard under the plants for some bounce when it was really sunny. The pepper plants are right beside my patio gazebo so it was no big deal to leave my camera on the patio for hours at a time and just check back now & then until Howie got into a good spot for shooting. A couple of them are cropped in for a closer view.

Well, one site did say that when he's getting ready to pupate he could wander in search of a good spot... maybe he felt your pots just weren't big enough for a special one like him?

I have 'raised' this kind of moth before. Take some soil, about 4 inches or so, put it in a box with some greens that it has been eating and keep them fresh. It will eat voraciously the closer it gets to needing to change. When the time comes, you will just not see it in the box anymore - it has buried itself in the dirt a few inches. When it is ready, the moth will emerge - a decent size for a moth and it will probably come out at night the first time. If the box is covered, you can let it go in the morning. I used an old screen to cover my box.

Awww farewell Howard :-( Cindi if you have them in pots why not try putting a gauze tent of some sorts over the area you last saw him and if he emerges again at least you will find him when he becomes a beautiful moth and we can have more photos of him in all his glory!!!!

Thanks for the info Cindi, just goes to show that I can get so much more out of the equipment I have already!!

I think we should declare today a National holiday!! Howard Day! Everyone take the day off work and shoot fireworks for Howard's memory! :D
