Should I shoot in RAW or JPEG when in Kazakhstan at the end of the month? I will be there for a month, and then in Georgia for a month. I want to get one of those portable Hard Drives for the trip. TAking all that into consideration, should i shoot in RAW or JPEG? |

I shot RAW this past week and ALMOST wish I'd shot jpeg, just for how long it takes to download a card then go through them in bridge. I'd say it depends... What are you planning to shoot? If you're doing "tourist snapshots" (I do those - don't laugh), set it for large jpeg and you should be good. If you're doing stuff you'd like to work on later, set it back to RAW. The problem, of course, will be to remember to set it to whichever. Which is why I leave mine on RAW, because half the time I forget to set the ISO back to something less than 800.... (So I'm sure this didn't help at all, but hey, it'll bump the thread...) |

I am gutted that I didn't use RAW for more of my travels a couple of years ago (Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand). I used RAW for the tricky lighting conditions, but never anticipated developments like HDR that would be able to really take advantage of RAW for other scenes at a later date. If you can, then I would recommend RAW.
One of the issues that I had at the time was storage - I had a 20GB hard drive but it had an inbuilt card reader that failed on Day 1! I now have a larger external HD that links into an external card reader, and am more careful with how many photographs I take/keep. If you are going to use RAW, I would recommend keeping on top of deletions of bad shots in camera to save space and later hassle.

The ONLY time I shoot jpeg, its when I don't have the time to upload or the storage space needed to accommodate shooting RAW. |

I haven't shot a JPG in several years. Having said that, I almost always have a laptop along for downloads, although if you pick up that Epson, you'll be in just as good a position. (If you don't let me know, I'm interested in it as well.)
The only problem with shooting either/or is that when you get that "once in a lifetime" shot, sod's law says you will be set on the wrong format...
Enjoy the trip, either way.

I am a mix kind of person, depending on the light, take a shot in either RAW or JPEG. one point to consider is that to have a RAW mode, it slow down the camera writing as well as the dump on the computer and that is because of the size. Also if you have noice reduction on then it would further slow down the writing speed specially if you are doing low light photography. |
