Did they teach you practical things in your Photog courses or was most of it pretty common sense stuff?

I would say "common sense" and "practical" are more or less synonymous. Do you mean, "Did they teach just basics and arty shit, or did they teach hands-on, professional skills?"

The answer to that depends on the school/department. Fine Arts schools tend to be strong on "creative" photography, while Design schools and, especially, photography schools tend to focus more on real-world professional skillsets.

I never went to school for photography, but went to an art school (NY Studio School) as a painter.

I meant more did they teach you useful things, or did they teach you the common sense stuff most "photographers" would already know. I guess I mean more along the lines of how advanced did the courses get. But yeah. Youre answer covered all the bases.

Technically and creatively, the courses were always challenging.

I have a bachelor's degree in Social Work from the University of Vermont.

I tried for 4 years to get into a photography class. Doing that without being a photography major was virtually impossible. To get into a photography class, you had to first take an art class. It took me to my second semester, my sophomore year to finally get into that class. For the last 2 years, I was on every waiting list possible, and I begged and pleaded to get into the photography class, and was never able to. :( SO SAD. I guess I should have just majored in it. Since I'm doing way more photography than I am doing social work.

;)

I have a degree in commercial photography, and took graphic design classes at an art school as well.

It gets pricey (usually, at least) but is a lot of fun. Whether its worth it or not is up to the individual
