There was a similar thing in a recent Fuji Mugs challenge for the topic "Repetition"
The top 3 entries were all photos of fence posts on a beach.
Weird hey :)
Maybe an interesting topic for a pschology student to study?

That was a different challenge!

sorry didn't realize we were talking about a spaceific challenge. Just thought we were talking about voting in general

yes, the last few challenge winners have something in common, but is that proof of a narrow minded voting public ?

If you look at the challenges before the 3 last ones you refer to, e.g. the trends, contrast, round challenge you see images in the top 3 which are not like each other at all. So where is the proof ?

Nevertheless I think you are right if you mean to say that a subjects or picture which is not too extreme, which can appeal to the mass, has a slightly higher change in getting a high end position, since the high votes are not offset by some very low votes.

But it still has to be a good match to the challenge theme, it has to be technically sound, and most of all it has to have visual appeal, a WOW factor. The originality and creativity is only a secondary factor.

This is just my opinion, not based on a large statistical sample, but just my opinion based on the score distribution with some winners I see. I think abstracts for example score more low votes than pictures of recognisable subjects.

In no way this should deter you from trying to be original and creative !!!!!!!!!! YOU have to be happy with the picture as well, whatever the mass thinks about it.

WOW! Knowing your work this comment from you it is one of the most flattering comment I have got for the entry!

My wife is itching to have a swipe with her knife at the voters ;)

I have a reshoot planned for the weekend - will post the results here.

There's a very complex, subversive, and psychologically affective reason I opted for black and white for the Forrest Gump submission: in the movie, his suit was light blue. I don't have a light blue suit. In black and white you can't tell. Crazy, huh? :)
