I bought a Cokin IR (P007) filter the other day and I've just been testing it, however due to the gap between the lens and the filter I'm getting a lot of light reflecting off the first element of the Lens. The fiter does not appear to fit in the wider slot of the Cokin holder nearest to the lens (not sure what that slot is for?). If I use my hand to shield the light I get a better result, but still not perfect.

Anyone have any tips as to what I should do?

I also use a cokin filter hood and, for added light blocking (and the amusement of others) I cut a hole in the top of a ski hat and use it as kind of a snood or sock. Works wonderfully and I love the results when compared to the Hoya 72.

I bought one a week ago to replace my broken R72. I was able to fit it into the wider slot you mention and think it fits well. This slot is usually used with the round circular polarizer, but if you compare the the length of your Cokin IR filter to that of another Cokin filter you will see that it is shorter. I presume it is shorter so it will fit flush between the two tabs on the top and bottom of the holder.

I wonder what Cokins recommended solution is? I guess if you are using IR film or an IR modified digital camera that the shutter speeds go up to a point where the light bleed is insignificant?

I was going to try it in the wider slot but was concerned that the top tab would scratch the filter as I pushed it in. I think, unless I get any other suggestions that I'll file the tab off, can't see that it does much unless I wanted to use a CPL.

Just unscrew the nuts holding the holder together and remove the shim that makes the widest slot the first one. Reassemble so it's the one furthest from the lens. Then you can use your filters right up against the lens.

That only works if you have the pro model holder. Mine is a one piece plastic unit with no nuts.

I was concerned about that as well but I saw no marks on the filter after testing it. And you can usually move those tabs slightly. I move them a bit in order to get my polarizer out.

Yep, that's exactly what I worried about in that same situation. I solved it by holding a piece of lens-cleaning cloth over the tab while sliding the filter in place. But your suggestion of filing the tab off sounds like a better long-term solution.

I've got the same filter and I usually just wrap a rag or something around the edge when I use it. Yeah, it's kinda ghetto, but it seems to work. I think I'll try to TechnoShroom's suggestion. But I'm pretty sure that Cokin makes a frame to cover all the gaps (for the pro model holder only, I think).

Ahhh... I have the Zpro and assumed they were all the same except for size.

Seems to me like this would solve the problem...

I filed off the top retaining clip/tab. Now the filter slips into the holder much easier, only having to bend it a little to prevent any scoring/scuffing. The slot is a little on the wide side, but as the it's tight to the thickness of the filter it doesn't move. Some slight scuffing of the edges where the filter fits in the slot, but that won't make any difference to the picture. Now I just need it to stop raining so that I can go out and take some pictures!
