Or does that only apply to green ones??
But seriously, this is a tobacco hornworm, distinguished from the tomato hornworm by the 7 straight lines as opposed to 8 v-shaped ones.
Tobacco hornworm also has a red horn rather than a black one...
Oh, and larval stage lasts 18 days... have you got enough peppers? :) |
You nailed it BeeCee!! :) |
But Pineapple was the first to get onto the right track :) |

I just read a little more and your peppers may or may not outlast Howard...
It seems that he's probably late in his larval stage, as that's the point where they've reached large size and eat tremendous amounts.
Soooo, I guess the question is, how much more can he eat before he pupates??
(He'll do that by dropping to the ground and burrowing in a little.) |

How about "Amnesty for Howard" - that seems to be a real popular topic!

Such a handsome green colored caterpillar, and he turns into a dull brown moth!! Poor guy.
Bee Cee I have pics of a tomato worm, what do they turn into? Maybe my tomato worm can be a buddy for Howard. They do look pretty similar
And this is a monarch butterfly caterpillar (someone mentioned Howard might be a monarch)

Hmmm now when I compare Howard with my Tomato Worm I can't see a difference, is there any chance that a Tomato worm or Tobacco worm may change their food preference if one or the other isnt present because my guy was definitely on a tomato plant!!! Cindi the plot thickens, maybe it is a conspiracy!!!

A mate for Howard! They have the same stripes and eyes. I bet they would have beautiful larvae. :)
What plant was the monarch shot on? Would love to catch one of those, very pretty!

Nah, tobacco worms like tomatoes too :) They're VERY closely related, though the tobacco worm stays farther south.
Hmmmm.... it's aliens... sending their young to be adopted by DPC members.... |

Better to adopt than having them come out of our chests.

So how's our little pepper-popper doing today? :)
If you're getting low on peppers, he'll chow down on anything in that family of plants, such as eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes, or petunias.
Maybe he'd like a nice flower blossom for dessert?

As you can see, Howard is an eating machine. He did some considerable damage to the peppers last night / this morning, but I think there are enough plants there to sustain him. If not I have another pepper variety I can transfer him to. I went ahead and picked the peppers I want to keep before he gets to them. I watched him eat 1/2 of a jalepeno last night.... what an appetite!

You guys and your soft spot for bugs... ;P
Although I do think it would be cool if you actually got to see him transform. I'm just not sure I'd be willing to sacrfice my peppers for him.
