I finally got my 17-40F4L today at lunch. Its quite painful looking at the box sitting on my desk knowing I have to wait to play with it till I get home in about 2 hours and 17 minutes and counting :)

Isn't this about the time you feel a slight fever coming on and in the interest of your co-workers' health, you should probably head home early?? |

Ok on another note, I'm thinking of getting a Circular Polarizer for the lens but I'm confused on the brands, The place where I'm most likely getting them from recommends either Kenko Pro1 Digital series or Rodenstock. My jaw pretty much hit the floor when comparing prices where the Kenko one is $124cdn and the Rodenstock is $275cdn.
The main reason I ask is I'm hoping the CP filter will help with my outdoor shooting in the mountains esp with lakes and I also keep hearing people say not to put cheep glass in front of good glass but is there really going to be THAT much difference between the Kenko and Rodenstock as far as image quality goes? I am pretty picky when it comes to image quality but not sure if the Rodenstock is really worth the extra $150cdn over the Kenko?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

For a 77mm C-pol, those prices are about what I would expect, though my reference is US$ and not loonies.
Personally, I think you could go with the Kenko filter and be happy. What you want to avoid is the cheap, bargain basement filters that aren't multicoated. Beyond that, you're just paying for minimal improvements in terms of flatness and flare reduction. If you think the Rodenstock filters are expensive, don't look at the Heliopan filters.
Also, with the 17-40, it would probably pay to make sure you're getting a "slim" filter, which will help avoid vignetting with wide angle lenses. And, of course, the "slim" filters cost more. This is especially important if you plan to use this lens on a film camera or a FF sensor camera like a 5D.
Is 77mm the largest filter diameter you need for all of you lenses? You can get the most out of your filters by purchasing the largest size and using step rings to adapt it to your other lenses. |
