At some point in the next few months, I want to upgrade my DSLR. Unless I'm constrained by my budget, I'm not really interested in the 30D (or whatever might come along to replace it) and even then, I'll probably just wait. I also have an investment in Canon glass, so I'm not interested in switching to Nikon (or any of the smaller brands) unless there is a hugely compelling reason. So, what's left? It's really down to a 1DmkIIn or a 5D. The 1DmkIIn is pretty much at the upper limit of my anticipated budget, so unless there's a significant price drop, the 1DsmkII and the 1DmkIII are not feasible.
Anyway, I wanted to solicit some opinions from folks on DPC and see what you think.
Thanks |

I just got the marketing brochure (more like a magazine unto itself) from CANON pimping their MK III and I tell you what, it almost was like reading Playboy ;)
If I were able to swing it I'd definately switch.

Well...if you need, or want for that matter, the 8.5fps machine gun that is the 1Dmk2n, then get that one. If not, save some money get the 5D. Judging by what's in your portfolio, I think you'd benefit more from the 5D than the 1Dmk2n.

Like Sam said, if you want speed go with the mk. That is the only quasi-complaint I have about my 5D. The extra milliseconds of shutter lag is noticeable (and irritating) having come from a 30D. Shooting pictures of a dog jumping for frisbees at high speed (for a dog) was not as easy as before.
Other than that, the 5D is a dream machine... |

Yeah... that looked sexy. I got brochure in rangefinder magazine. Nikon better comeup with something kick ass soon. I'm in a need of upgrade myself.

None of the lenses you list in your profile are weather-sealed, so that's one advantage of the 1D negated, unless you intend to change them all. I'd respectfully suggest that the 5D might be the better option for you, based upon a quick glance at your portfolio, as, among other things, the 70-200 is perhaps the only lens that will take full advantage of the 1D's speedy autofocus capabilities. All of your lenses are FF compatible, I believe.
Sorry if I'm rambling, I'm half-way through a rather excellent bottle of whisky.

I was not aware that only L lenses provided faster AF. DO you have more info on that?
I know that the USM/HSM lenses are faster due to the motor design. |

USM/HSM are, indeed, generally faster. It's a matter of whether (for the Canon lenses, at least) it's ring- or micro-USM, ring-USM being the faster by far. AFAIK, the 70-200 would be the fastest-focussing of the lenses that you list {Lensbaby is probably the slowest :) } and therefore the best matched to the decisiveness of the 1D's AF system, although I noticed a visible improvement in accuracy when I switched to the f/2.8 version.
The upshot is, as far as I'm concerned, that, if you're not shooting action, then the 5D might be a better camera. My own situation is that I bought the 1D because I really, really wanted it and then found that I wanted faster and faster focussing lenses to go with it. As always, YMMV.
All the foregoing said, you can't really go far wrong with either.

Come to the dark side Nikolai.....
Isn't the 5D about due to be replaced by something? The 5D might meet your most basic needs, but I say...if you can afford it.... go for the 1D. Someone mentioned the shutter lag on the 5D. That would piss me off endlessly, and if I'm going to spend that much money (which I'm not) I want to be left with ZERO complaints! |

Test the shutter lag yourself
Shutter lag test
Shutter lag on a 5D shoot only with a Canon. :-P

Pretty cool.
Nikon D200 w/ Sigma 30mm F1:1.4
Prefocus = just shy of .1 sec (update - varied because of timing at .04 to .1)
W/O prefocus = just shy of .3 sec (update - varied because of timing at .2 - .3)
Not sure how this rates but seems fast.
edit: not trying to change the subject : )

If only your basic needs are met by a 5D then you've got a pretty odd definition of 'basic'!
I mentioned the shutter lag. 5D isn't a sports camera, nor is it touted as such. It's not so much a complaint against the camera as just a difference between it and the 30D which took a bit to get used to (re-training my timing). I'm extremely happy with the 5D and would recommend it to anyone. |

Do you still use your 30D at all? I'm in no danger of getting either the 5D or the 1D. But, I still think if I were going to spend THAT much money on a camera, that I'd want one that I could use as both a studio camera or take to a ball game with me. Or, maybe I'd just get the 5D and still carry around my 30D. |

Sold it the day after I got the 5D heheh. I don't shoot sports/action and have no interest in doing so (frisbee catching dog being the occassional exception). So I'm happy with the 5d. |

I don't really do sports either. I just like knowing I could. I'm also in love with my neighbor's horses. |
