"i had a dream"
just who is this man, and what is he thinking?
is he at a funeral, feeling somber about another innocent life wasted?
is that dark negative space his past, present, or future...or is it our past, present, or future?
what was his dream?
did he realize his dream?
was it a bad dream, or a good dream?
is he giving up, resigned to his life as it is?
-----
when you stop and look at this, what does this image say to you? does it make you wonder...

He looks resigned to having 'had' a dream and not fulfilling it.
Strong imagery. |

Contemplating the path not taken?
Strong, thought provoking image.
Good stuff!

He dreamed he was in a Hollywood movie, and that he was the star of the movie.
This really blew his mind, the fact that he, an overfed, long-haired, weeping gnome should be the star of a Hollywood movie.
oh - wrong dream.

Frankly? It looks like he's checking you out to see if you're going to make it to the buffet line before he does...and he's pretty sure you will.
The pretty lighting and the lack of background/context make it possible to make up any story you like....I can make up some more, if you like. :) |

i can't complain about the score, because this is dpc. the thing i would want would be for people who are interested in photography, especially as an art, to look back through the images in the challenge not in terms of where they finished, but how they used the negative space...
was it really negative space, or just a small subject?
did the space really give the image impact?
was the space the subject?
was the space more than just a pretty backdrop?
----
when i'm shooting negative space, my primary concern is weight. i want a slight imbalance between my subject and the negative space, tipping towards the negative space. i also want that space filled in such a way that it supports the subject.
here are some other examples:
one more consideration for negative space is publication. art directors LOVE images with lots of strong negative space. it allows them to run full-page, full-bleed images while having LOTS of room for text--and that's a good reason to have simple, single-hued backgrounds for your negative space. |
