Happened to browse the "least comments" section of photos on the site, intending to pick a few for commenting. Two of the three I chose did not display, because the photographers were no longer members on the site. Fair enough, but why are the thumbnails still viewable in the Browse Photos section?
Not a complaint, really - while it was disappointing not to be able the view the images I selected, I'll live. :) I just wondered why the photo browser section has these red herrings in them.
Example:
Hmmm....this is a web site suggestions thread, I forgot. :) Would it be better, then, to not have these dead links? Is there a good reason to keep them?
[forgive me if this question is redundant - I searched the forums and couldn't find the topic] |

ah, good point - but then I guess the question becomes shouldn't they be marked in some way so we don't bother clicking on them? |

I agree - there is no point in having picture that you can't comment on show up in the "least commented" section. (I've experienced the same thing and after clicking 6 picture where you are not able to comment on 5 of them you just give up). |

it sounds like they are going to STAY in the least commented and there's nothing we can do about it ;P I feel so helpless. |

would be welcome to have SC weigh in on this...hello? :D
I did some more testing with images in the least comments section and did find a high proportion that were "dead". I assume one of the main reasons for the section is to have an easy place to go to find comment-less photos in order to contribute a comment, so it is a bit silly to click and click and click before you find something you can actually see.
So I guess my official suggestion is, if we need to keep the images there for some reason, that they be marked in some way to indicate they are "dead". |

I'm thinking it's because that image was posted in a member's portfolio, who hasn't renewed their membership. Thumbs still visible while full version isn't, have came across those.
Have a look at Terje's profile //www.dpchallenge.com/profile.php?USER_ID=15497
See those thumbs.

That is a possibility, but the question as I see it is no longer "why" it is so, but instead how to deal with the practicalities of clicking on thumbs that have no further links. Just a convenience suggestion, to mark them as 'dead' somehow - to avoid unnecessary clicks. |

If they were entries they would still be viewable. I do know when your membership expires portfolio images take a few months to expire in case you decide to renew. Maybe that is the case here?

As unfortunate as it is, this seems to be a case where it's the site's best interest versus the users. Your points are valid, but the site wants people to continue their memberships and not abandon their portfolios.
Perhaps a compromise would be to take them out of certain browsing sections, but this is also against the sites best interest, as this involves more database transactions (probably an extra MySQL clause to remove "dead" images) per page load. This slows the servers, and everybody takes a hit...
Just a thought as to why some things which seem like a good idea to us simply aren't done. |
