Ok, so i just worked all the Puzzle Macro photos and i think the most common mistake that the submitters made were lacking a wide enough DOF. Way too many photos had great subjects but the focus was either off or too shallow to really see the focus.
This make me think twice about my future macro shoots.
What did you guys find to be the most common mistake and what lesson did you carry away from it?

Who says they were mistakes?
Who's to say they weren't done intentionally?
Who's to really question the right or wrong with abstracts?
Is there right & wrong in abstracts?
Just playing the devil's advocate.

Hmmm...let me ponder that while voting is still active.

Perhaps I'll have an answer at the appropriate time (when the challenge has finished). |

To be fair, i say mistakes because these were elements that don't seem to work in concert with the other elements of the photo. Kinda like when you here a piano player play a wrong note, it really shows. Unless you're listening to abstract music where there are no wrong notes, but i think just about everyone on this site wants there photos to be liked (voted the best) so i tried to say what i thought was holding many of them back from a higher vote in my eyes.

I learned to trust my own judgement and NOT to ask my partner for his photography advice, opinions, etc etc. Oddly enough, he uses my bad score on his choice as proof that 'everyone on DPC is crazy' like me. |

I'd say the biggest 'mistake' (if you want to call it one) in the Puzzle Macro would be making the subject matter too obvious.
But it's so hard to balance a pleasing composition/interesting photo with the challenge directive of making your subject difficult to discern. |

i think the mistake too many people made was taking a photo of something larger than their camera's image sensor. this gives them a reproduction ratio greater than 1:1 and should therefore not be considered a macro. if it's not a macro, then it should be DQ'd with extreme prejudice.
let's burn some villages! who's with me? |

My lowest votes went to shots with no evident "subject"... just photos of some texture. (Definitely the hardest to identify ;)
Next lowest votes went to shots with evidently unintentional technical shortcomings.
Then shots which were too obvious or didn't grab me aesthetically.
Higher scores went to images with that elusive combination of clarity, composition, and ambiguity. |

The DOF in mine was maybe 1-2mm, but I was shooting at more than 3x. Of course it is getting hammered, but I like it. |

Do you give high scores? Your average vote cast is a 4.3 ... |
