Is there anyway you can alter your background (make it less distracting) without violating general rules? |

If it is already blurred then you can add more blur. Just don't take the blur too far by obliterating the background. What is considered 'too far' depends on the image. |

for one thing, it would depend on which ruleset you're talking about.
There are lots of things you can do. yes, adding more blur, darken, change color, clone out MINOR distractions, cropping, desat, etc.
If you think something you're working on may even be questionable, the best bet would probably be to send in a ticket to SC with your resized original and edit, and get an opinion. :-) |

Can I burn it, if I burn the entire background? Burning is how I would handle it, if it weren't general rules.
I'm getting ready to enter my least favorite of the three shots I did because of the background. |

You can not burn it in basic editing. In advanced, you can, but go careful with how much. If you totally burn in the background so that there is no detail left where there was detail originally, it might be grounds for DQ. |

Burn it into oblivion? No.
Your best to get a pre-contest opinion by submitting a ticket. Each image is different so what is acceptable in one case may not be in another. |

Seeing that you will be entering mostly basic challenges (until you put that blue shirt on) the short answer is "no". In advanced your options are wider, but you still can't go crazy.

I used to have a blue shirt, but I RARELY participate in challenges. It is entirely probable that this will be the ONLY challenge I participate in THIS YEAR. I work about 60 hours in an average week. I just don't have time, and trying to find time when my models can help me out.... well, forget about it. Like I said in one of the threads I had a perfect shot, but couldn't get it because if my little brother even sees my camera anywhere around... he covers his face and/or sticks up his middle finger. All he had to do was keep doing what he was doing, but nooooooooo.
Anyway, any extra money I get these days is being invested 100% into my equipment, and considering how rarely I do challenges, I just can't justify putting my blue shirt back on at this time. |

In Advanced or Expert challenges, you can use any selection tools. |

What's a "General Challenge?"
We have:
Minimal
Basic
Advanced
Expert |

All my challenges are "general" challenges : )
Seriously, there is no such thing -- all challenges are run under one of the published rule sets; right now there are four: Minimal, Basic, Advanced, and Expert.
I think "general rules" in the thread title refers to any rule which is common to all four rule sets. |

I meant Basic Rules. Sorry about the confusion. |

Ragamuffin, I suggest that you read the rules. They're really pretty clear about selection tools and a bunch of other things.
As to your original question, people have lost ribbons because they burned the entire background to black.

I believe your question is answered by reading those. |
