Today I took some pics of Anthony and Ashley. Anthony is my lead programmer and his grilfriend, Ashley is due to have their baby girl this Friday. I offered to do some sappy prego pics for them down at the beach. I took about 150 pics and I think I got a few keepers. Still waiting to hear how they like 'em. I was expecting less sun and had no reflector or assistant to hold one so I am aware of some of the harsh shadow issues, but overall I think I did ok.
These are among my faves:
Here's the collection - any feedback is appreciated - not really my cup o' tea, but wanted to try out the 30D on something worthwhile and I gotta say it rocks! |

I like this one too, but thought the background ship was a little distracting so I went for a little high key edit. Duplicated background layer set to screen, then masked out her dress, and curve to bring down the dark parts. |

I like this one the best. The background is not distracting and the couple are focused on the pregnant belly. You can feel their pride in this photo. I also find the angle that she is shown in this photo to be the most flattering. |

the spaghetti sauce didn't show in the searches. the sauce is probably a more well known meaning of the term...

No way to tell. ;-) Now go change your username to "Ultrasound" :)

Joe: I like your edit. The distracting ship is a ferry - I was trying to include a local landmark (so to speak). :)
Thanks cloudsme for your feedback as well!

Coincidentally, my next big creative project will be "Spaghetti Porn" - anyone up for 30 days of that?? :P
Anyone else want to comment or give some feedback on any? Final bump. |

Great job Ken Art!!! In addition to the ones you pointed out, I also like this one.
Maternity photography aka "Prego Pics" are a lot of fun to shoot. I've been shooting them for a while now and have picked up a few pointers if you're interested.
Form fitting = good. Meaning loose fitting garments that cover the stomach do little justice to the budding belly. Dresses and wraps tend to drop straight down from the belly and make the mommy look... uhm.... less pregnant (trying to be politically correct). The exception to this of course is a sheer that wraps the figure, drops from the belly, but is transparent enough to show the shape of the figure under the wrap. I prefer not to do location "prego pics" for a variety of reasons all of which essentially just boil down to personal taste. Basically I feel that maternity photography should be about the mother-to-be and the bond she shares with the baby. Locations, props, backgrounds, etc can take away from that intimacy which is why most of my stuff is done against black or white backdrops and occassionally very simple natural backgrounds like open windows, etc.
You were very lucky to have a father who actually wanted to be involved in the images, I haven't been so lucky yet... most dads either stay at home, or stay away from the front of my lens.
I have tons of new maternity shots I'll be posting in the next few days if you're interested.
All in all, great job!

Some of my favs are maternity shots.
I see that in Covington, La pop. about 60,00+- we have a shop called "Pregnant Pics". I may have the name a little wrong but...anyway..
I'm wondering if there is a great enough demand for these types of shots where it would be worth it to set up a studio. If not, do you think it would work if you went "on-site" to do these types of shots?

Check her out. She's my hero and seems to be quite successful at doing just that! I'm getting more recognition locally, but it's a tough nut to crack... persistence is a virtue!

People love to remember being pregnant. I can't imagine why. The act of child birth (including the belly growing) has changed me forever. I really wish the stork would just drop them off. |

LOL - small world. Jennifer Loomis advertises on my client's network of websites ( //www.myseattlebaby.com and //www.mynewyorkbaby.com to name a couple).
Lee, that is some great feedback and tips! In thinking about it, I totally agree about the setting and backdrops and I intended to take some indoor by-the-window shots, but timing didn't work out.
Thanks to all. Very much appreciated. |
