remember this thread, and how excited I was?

And maybe you remember this thread too? About asking your opinion?

Well... all for nothing. Today I found out the article with the photo and interview of mine and 5 other photographers isn't published in the magazine...

I'm so pissed! Getting the job done, and after that waiting for weeks untill the magazine got in the stores.. finding out my photo is not there!!!

AAArgh!

That sucks...but wait...have you contacted them? Maybe they loved your interview so much that you are going to make the cover of the next issue..ya never know!!
06/24/2007 05:43:53 PM · #3
yep, mailed them tonight.. still waiting for a reply. pretty curious about what the reason is.

if they come up with an excuse that they didnt make the deadline, that would be a lie, because we had to make sure everything was set in the first week of may..

edit: the thing that bothers me most is that we weren't informed that the article isnt in the magazine. A mail is a small gesture...

But did you get paid for the photos?
06/24/2007 05:50:01 PM · #5
nope. that magazine has an online gallery with it. they pick the photos they want in the mag from that gallery.

they asked me and 5 others to do this assignment, but also on a voluntary base. It's a big magazine, so I couldn't refuse this offer (lots of exposure, you know.., at least that's what I thought)

Welcome to the media industry....

I've had weekends where I go out and shoot 3 or 4 events, at the request of the paper.. Shoot 1000 photos, one in the pouring rain, spend 2 or 3 hours editing and captioning 30 or so, sending them off before deadline...

Then a major advertiser for the issue pulls out, or the reporter doesn't file the event stories before deadline, and I get one lousy image published for 10 hours work, and they mess up the caption for that one and credit me with it so I take the crap from the sports club at the next event..

There are some big highs, lots of middle, and quite a few lows in any media based job. Just having the best photo, best story, or exclusive for an event doesn't get you anywhere if the rest of the 'machine' isn't in your working in your favor.

Be interesting to see if you get a response, my experience with papers and magazines is that the traffic is all one way, and the only way you know that they like any of your work is when you see it in print...

I might be a bit down on the paper at the mo, and this is only my 2c worth, but you do need a thick skin to work for print media companies, paid or volunteering..

Cheers, Me.

Yep I agree, media world is something to behold. I work many weekends and nights getting shots that are requested only to have them either not run, or they do run and I never know it(unless I pick up the paper) because I never hear back from the editor. Magazine and newspaper layouts can change hourly depending on advertising and lots of other things. We at the bottom of the pile never really see all that goes into making it to print, only when you can sit down and understand what all goes into it.

I know that really sucks. I know it's no consolation but I think your "walk to infinity" is absolutely out of this world. Keep up the great photography so the rest of us can marvel at it.

@ KiwiChris: I KNOW it's not easy to get into it, that's why I participated! The woman who mailed me (with who I had great contact via mail) was asked by the magazine to create an article to stimulate creativity. this was gonna be the first one.

if this turns out to be a one-way-mail, I'd be even more pissed. We made that article, we were interviewd and all.. it's morning here now and I'm still pissed, haha! Can't even explain everything in English now.

Anyway, will keep you guys posted about this.

@ the rest: thanks so much..

update: turns out the advertising-guys got too much ads in the magazine, and the article is re-scheduled..

now we have to wait another 1 1/2 month :(

Ah, but that's good! More ads mean the magazine is doing well. Patience is a virtue, or so they say! Hang in there - it'll get published. And think of how many copies you're going to have to buy to send to all of us. :-)

That's not so bad, if it was editorial they would just chuck it out... Happens to me quite often.

'Soft' articles that are not time sensitive often get bumped back an issue at the last minutes for needed space.

It's really cool that you got in the mag, sorry you have to wait longer than anticipated. I recently had to wait to see a photo in a popular mag due to the story being bumped into a new space 3 months (issues) later.

Oh Han, I'm sorry - I know that meant a lot to you too.
There's always a reason though. Somehow I would bet in the grand scheme of things, something better is lurking over the horizon.

Sorry to hear they are screwing you around... When I was working for Tokyo Life magazine in Japan I was SUPPOSED to get the cover for the January editing with my sunrise..(extra $$s) instead it made center page gallery (still good I know)

A sports magazine said my shots of the Chiba cup game was the best they ever see and would be used .. I even bought the mag to see them and show them to my gathered friends.... NADA! nothing and no apology either.

I know the pain. Looks like you are on to another wait out.. good luck, don't eat too much choco waiting.. hehe

ah well, the anger is gone now ;) thanks for your support guys..

I'll wait another 1 1/2 month, I can live with that. the chief of the magazine assured us it WILL be in the next issue, I hope he keeps his promise!

:)

That sucks. Sorry, Han.
