Had a visitor this afternoon as I was preparing to powerwash the storage shed for painting I ran into this guy. It's an Eastern Hognose Snake. Sure makes a lot of noise, getting all hissy - and puffed up too! Very cool. :D

I'll post a couple more later...need to get back to "work". :P

those are fun to play with. Did he play dead for ya?

For those that haven't sen a hognose play dead, it is hilarious, they even hang their tongues out.

Very cool find! I love snakes (currently own 26). My roommate (who owns close to 80) and I breed them. We don't own any hognoses yet, but they are on the list for this year.

What I love about hoggies is that they are all bluff. They make such a big hiss, cobra pose, puff up or play dead....but they are as docile as can be when handled. They are however, mildly venomous being a rear fanged snake. It is very rare to get bit by one and if you are it is normally a feeding response, not due to aggression. Most people who do get bit just have minimal swelling in the bite area similar to a reaction to a bee sting.

Would love to see more pics of this little beauty if you have them!

Ok. Here's a few more. Kind of still like that first one the best photographically.

Only in a photo. :P I usually leave the snakes alone unless they're in the house.

Nah. I pretty much left him alone except to slow down his escape to get some photos. Sure did make a noisy fuss though - lot's of hissing.

Dang. Who needs a security system with all those reptiles around?! :P

Yep. Certainly fun to watch. Did all of the above except for playing dead. :D

Yeah, you have to mess with them a while before they play dead. It's usually the last act. They do a good rattlesnake impression in leaves too :-)

Yeah. It had it's tail all curled in a tight little coil when I first saw it (had moved some when I got back with the camera). Had me thinking for a second because we have had Timber Rattlesnakes around here also!

Great series of shots. He was really flattening out that head for you! Do you see them often where you live?

We don't raise anything very threatening. Mostly cornsnakes with some kingsnakes, milksnakes and ratsnakes thrown in. The kings can be a little intimidating sometimes though.
