I agree. I try to be optimistic and when i think a photo DNMC i look for a reason to make it meet the challenge. most times i give the benefit of the doubt but in a case like this the challenge is VERY clear. |

This one got 3rd in the 4-5am challenge. The shot was of the sun...in the daytime. Knowing what you know now, would you have rated this over a 5?
This was one of the comments:
This may alienate some fellow DPC-ers but so be it.
All those who complain so loudly about the "time" aspect of your photograph overlook an immensely important fact: Nowhere in the description of the challenge is a time zone specified. So 4am or 5am in one place is some other time somewhere else. It's all relative and really doesn't matter one bit. You made a BEAUTIFUL image by creating a great illusion - pretty much what photography (other than the strictest scientific or forensic kind) is all about, wouldn't you say??

you keep pointing out things that b=voters may have not known about which is irrelevant to the OP. if someone uses an animal vs a person it will be very evident (well unless you shot a photo of Robin Williams) |

I don't want this to turn into yet another thread debating appearances vs. actually meeting the challenge.
There's no way the voters can be fooled, unlike the 2 second and night challenges, so the issue isn't relevant here.
If you can make an animal look like a person, though, I think you'll do fine. :)

I hear ya! I didn't enter the 4-5am challenge for "obvious" reasons! I couldn't get up that early! However, I didn't even THINK about taking a shot at say...8pm !

I'd like to see DQable extra rules on challenges like the ones you keep bringing up. If it says 2 seconds, I think it should mean 2.0 seconds. Night means night.
Many people argue that it's the appearance of meeting the challenge that matters. I just disagree. I've asked the SC to recognize that that approach seems to be the majority view and add "appears to be" to challenges, but they think that won't help.
Shrug. |

This is very simple to me, and I don't understand why people insist on twisting it as much as possible.

they do put rules in now. after the two sec problem. the 30 sec or more challenge DQd if it was less than 30 sec. |

Go right ahead and call me a nazi, if you must, but you can rest assured that if I do vote, I will vote you down for anything other than a hidden " person in your otherwise person-less photo"
I truly don't understand this. When the "assignment" is as clear as this, just exactly WHY do people feel this need to rebel against it? Is it simply so they can defy an authority? Does it make them feel tough or super clever? I just don't get it.
If your job is to build furniture, do you insist on trying to get away with knitting sweaters, instead?
WHY not simply do your best to fulfill the "assignment" ??? |
why not do my best? because i dont have have time to, im a student in highschool who works pretty much fulltime, so i dont have days to do a photo. I use what I can.
Your kind of jumping to conclusions aren't you? I am not trying to "rebel", defy authority or anything else you said. I just went out shooting the other day in the little time I had not intending to take a photo for this challenge, but captured a nice photo that i thought might be good for the challenge.
But after seeing all these responses I think I'm going to pull it and put it in the free study instead. |

You, yourself, are saying that you're settling for something not good enough!
Just because you didn't have time, doesn't mean you HAVE to enter just for the sake of entering.
If a photo isn't suitable/appropriate/good enough, you could just simply NOT enter it, and wait for next time when you CAN do your best.

Err, this is true for just about everyone on the site. So why should it be an excuse for you?
Edit: Not that we're all high school students, that in general we're mostly normal people with very busy lives. I work full-time, run a home business, attend graduate school, and am in the middle of moving. And somehow, golly gee, my entries stick to the challenge topic just fine!

Hey, as long as you don't complain about DNMC comments, I have no problem with you entering whatever you like. And I haven't seen you complain yet.
Many of us are quite busy, and I know I often enter what I can get, too. I do try to hit the challenge well, but I know where you're coming from.

When you get to be slightly older, a bit more mature, you may begin to fully comprehend just how mind numbing this comment is.
Let's assume your current employer saw this... Just how do you think that person would react to such a statement... Yes indeed, let's make certain ole noisemaker is given lots of time to do HIS work, otherwise he won't do his best... YEP, that sure is a vote of confidence. :O)

It's not that I was going to enter for the sake of entering, I'm pleased with the shot and thought it would fit in great... untili actually read the description |

ha, thanks for twisting what I said :-)
Im talking strictly in taking photos for a photo site. It's the fact that I put my best effort in Work and School that i don't have time to put my best into challenges.
sorry for the confusion |

edit: I see the OP got to you before I did!
I don't think he meant he doesn't have time to do his best...I think he meant that he has so much other stuff ...school, work etc that he can't spend a lot of time getting a perfect photo. He then has to do what a lot of us "sub 6ers" have to do. That is try a few shots, edit and pick the best one!
I myself rarely have time to "do my best" on an entry but I have fun. I do at times complain about my score though! But in the end, I know it's not a great picture!

Why do people here try to turn every challenge into a free study buy using inventive titles or saying animals are persons? Yes I have known a lot of people that are animals, even a few that I call dogs and a few great looking girls that I call foxes. When someone double-crosses me I call them a snake and the worst people are called beasts. When someone is complaining too much they are a bitc*, and ignorant people are pigs. Fat people are cows and stupid people are turkeys. But persons are humans and not animalistic people.
.
Come on it says people; "Hide a person in your otherwise person-less photo" so an animal can be a people but cannot be a person. Sorry but on this one any animal will get very low scores even on technically great photos. This is not a free study TURKEYS! |
