I just got back from a very cool photography exhibit tonight. It wasn't just any type of exhibit. It was on the beach. At night. In the sand. For free.

There were 25 giant cubes (about 10 feet high) with a photo on either side (50 photos total) arranged in a huge circle on the beach.

It's called the Illume and its current stop is in on Huntington Beach, now through June 17. If you are in the area, I highly recommend this exhibit.

The North American tour started in Aspen, Colorado, now in HB, and later in Portland, Oregon.

The main Illume web site is here.

Here is a link to what the HB exhibit looks like on the beach.

This is an excerpt from the program booklet:

"Illume began in April 2006 with a simple, yet novel, idea: to celebrate and honor the men and women behind the lens who brave the planet's harshest terrain in order to capture athletic grit and triumph.

Thousands of photographers from over 90 countries responded to a global image quest. Here we present the 50 finest--selected by esteemed photo editors--that will travel the world as Illume's inaugural Exhibit Tour.

This exhibit is a collection of remarkable photographs illuminated by spirit and energy. It is a stage for the athlete's lifestyle and the athlete's playground. It is experimentation embodied. Mostly, it is a tribute to the creativity and the raw skill of 45 of the world's top action and adventure sports photographers."

I had my camera in that area yesterday evening, but didn't have my tripod. I took some shots, but will go back tonight and try to get better shots.

My pleasure!

It is really weird to see such a "Stonehenge"-like structure in the middle of the beach (where, normally, volleyball nets are set up).

100% right on, lesgainous!

My wife and I visited this past Sunday, and the Sunday before.
Packed with visitors - refreshing to see!

It's next stop is Portland, Oregon.

I brought my tripod and grabbed these overviews.
The second one is an HDR composition (I'm still learning!)

Cheers!

Sweet photos, Ralf! When I was there I didn't even consider the perspaective that you used in the HDR shot.

When it arrives in Oregon, I recommend all you Pacific Northwesterners go and visit the exhibit.

We'll probably have completed our move to Washington by the time it hits Portland. I may just have to take a little trip over there and check this out. Looks amazing! Thanks so much for sharing!
