I was hoping for a bit better on this image, I'm not complaining about the outcome but I'm curious about your thoughts on why this didn't do better. All comments received were positive, but obviously many voters didn't care for it. Any thoughts, critiques are appreciated.

5.98 is pretty darn good for DPC.
However, to boost your score over 6 on this you'd probably need to give the contrast a boost. As it is it is a little flat. |

What struck me was the fact that he is IN the fog, not apparently coming out of it, thus it didn't seem to fit the challenge. Its a nice image, just doesn't say Transitions to me. Some detail in the guy's face would probably have bumped your score up a bit, though.

Its really good overall and you nearly got a 6 which is pretty darned good. I would have straightened it abit. Granted, the boat was probably tilted in the water but the perception is that its slightly tilted.
The border could have been removed. The main function of a border is basically to contain the image visually. This shot doesn't need it.
That aside, the blue monochrome works really well with it. It definitely has atmosphere and visual appeal.

i personally think it would have had more impact if had been an old rowboat...now granted this might not have been possible as this might not have been posed but i just think an old boat would have added more mystique to the shot, i also noticed the tilt to it... |

Jack, I didn't vote in this challenge. I devoted my voting time to the other open challenge. On first glance this would have gotten an 8 from me, and on a second pass I may have raised it to a 9. I like the way the boat tilts, btw. I think it's a good subject and the coming out of the fog is implied in the photo, so it meets the challenge well. I didn't like the frame (no biggie), and I have mixed feelings about the blue color -- but I don't hate it. |

thanks everyone, good comments and very helpful ideas. It seems like the bottom line here is that the picture needs something to appeal to the "mass" audience in order to get up into the mid-6 range. I'm not sure if its possible with this type of shot, but I enjoyed taking and processing it, certainly hope others enjoy it as well
