i sense 100's of photos of glasses with food colouring getting dropped in the glass...

most likely there will be a extra challenge made for canada day/ independance day

so do you think that a colourful subject will be DNMC as the guide lines state
Use a colorful impact to offset your subject from the rest of the photograph.

or colourful on a plain BG is whats called for?

For the most part voters ignore the descriptions so if your shot shows "burst of color" very well you should be fine in terms of meeting the challenge.

Note the first Burst of Color challenge was under Advanced Editing rules, and that's evident from many of the top place finishers (including the Blue Ribbon shot). Easier to make color pop from its surroundings when you can selectively manipulate; should be a bit more challenging under Basic Editing guidelines.
