OMG! While looking for 'Desolation' inspiration I ran across Peter Clark, ever heard of him? His images of the Southwest USA are so dismal and desolate I can't help finding myself at a loss of words.

To me, it sounds like the picture you're describing would have been more appropriate for the "Despair" challenge.
"Desolate" is more "devoid of inhabitants and visitors", "showing the effects of abandonment and neglect", "barren wasteland" type of stuff (IMHO).

How's about Desolation - but no black and whites or duotones? That would narrow down the field a bit! ;)
