The forum search should allow an option to exclude signatures from the search. A search for 'wedding' will result in countless useless threads because someone has the word in their signature.

That WOULD be nice, but Master Yoda says the required programming would require major changes.

The signatures them selves should not be embedded in the posts. They should have a simple on or off 0 or 1. Then the Signature is pulled from the database from the corosponding profile (row).

This way not only will by default the search wont enumerate the signature.

The signatures will also change when the user updates it.

This strategy has both advantages and disadvantages. It is advantageous in that it would easily allow searches to exclude sigs, and it would also imply automatic updates to previous posts when a signature is changed.
The downside is that it requires a *lot* of additional database lookups. Essentially, the preferences of every user who posted in the thread must be read, the signature information parsed and attached to the posts. This would need to happen every time someone views the thread, rather than once, when the post is made.
The overhead is significant; a good example is Jeff's DPCMod for profile pics. It's a little wonder, but adds significantly to the time to load a long thread.
One final thought... the fact that signatures in old posts would "update" is not necessarily a benefit. Depending on how you look at it, it could be a negative.

Yeah i was debating wether to list that downside. NGEMU.com a emulation website that does less image work but much more activity in the forums of course works this way and yes it does tie up the server in database requests and makes pages load slower.

And on your final thought.

1 - People with wpl teams have updated their cards by uploading over the same image so they old signatures update by keeping the same image number and are still there which is a partial solution to not having to update.

2 - Too old many signatures missing image content and broken links.

3 - When talking about he signature or this or that yeah updating can be bad or confusing.

Well, to be fair, that's not quite the same thing. The profile pic is at a constant, known location for a given user and does not need to be looked up. It does need to be transferred, however, which adds the extra time.

Maybe I should proxy those images, too (like my slideshow mod), or maybe Langdon should enforce a size limit (~5k-10k). I see that scalvert's beautiful, colorful Suess-esque bust is a tidy 6k, while RainMotorsports b/w is up at 30k. These images likely get cached slowly over time, but waste not want not.

Sorry to be off topic.

signatures should be excluded, in that case.
