| Thought I'd share with anybody needing an external HD: I just bought a 500 gig Western Digital My Book Premium Edition hard drive at Costco for $149 (regular $169 - $20 discount at the register). Cheapest on Pricegrabber is $169 + shipping. The Premium edition has firewire inputs plus other goodies. And you can't beat Costco's return policy, but hopefully that won't ever be necessary. Ends June 18th. They also have a 750Gb Seagate external drive available next week for $239 with a mailed coupon, but I don't like upright drives like that one. |

Actually I am looking for a second External. I currently have a Maxtor 500GB....I am not familiar with the quality of the other brands...so can anyone enlighten me on maybe other brands of comparable price and good quality but 500GB or over. And in Aussie prices please.

I can't quote Aussie prices, but I am very happy with the external hard drive that the OP mentioned. I've had it for almost a year without any problems. I'll probably get the 1 Tb that I mentioned (same series).
I didn't like the software that came with it, so I turned that part off and simply click and drag my files. That's what I hear that most people do anyway.

That's for the "Essential" version, still a great buy for $130. The "Premium Edition" is the one Costco carries. |

Looks like the only difference is one has firewire and one doesn't?

| Judi, Harvey Norman currently have the hard drive Telehubbie was refering to for about $270, its the 500gb. I nearly bought this one but went for the one you have, more expensive but I knew the brand. I don;'t know if there are any Harvey Norman's up your way (may be just a Sydney thing). If you want any further info on it just let me know. |

Ya, not a big difference other than that. It has blue lights on the front instead of green that show how full it is, and has some backup software pre-loaded on it. Not a big deal really. |

I've got one of these 320's that I just bought. Premium and I cant get my PC to recognize it when using firewire. I installed it using the USB cable as it suggests and then shut it off and went to reinstall it via the firewire and it wont recognize it. Even tried another known good cable. Have you got yours to work with firewire? I wonder if there is something wrong with this one. I just bought it today, got a 320 premium for $120 in store.

| I have that 320 and I had to buy a different firewire card to get it to work. Called their techsupport, at the time they said there were issues with certain fw chipsets. My other firewire devices worked with both the old and new card. |

| What's the difference between the Premium and the Essential? |

The Essential version doesn't have a capacity gauge, Firewire interface or backup software. Coincidentally, I just got the 500Gb Premium from Costco last night, and I'm filling that sucker right now. ;-) |

That sucks, this is a newish PC(built last december) and a new firewire card and it wont recognize it. I cant get the backup software to work right either, if I do a manual backup it works great(using USB) if I try the auto it rebooted my PC. I'm thinking there must be something wrong with the drive. I'll call WD monday morning.
